Mazda's RX series is famous for being fitted with their unique Wankel rotary engine. These engines use a rotational motion rather than pistons. The benefit of this is that the motion of all the parts are in one direction as opposed to violently changing directions. The result is a smooth, light and compact engine with a great power/weight ratio. It also means it can easily reach high RPMs quickly giving it that unique sound we all love!

On the left we have a 1972 mazda RX3 along side its younger brother, a 1986 FC RX7. Both have been fitted with a ported turbo 13b that sounds menacing on idle and screams down the straight! Both cars held their own against HSV v8s and AMGs alike!
The RX3 is small, boxy and looks unassuming, with its giveaway being the intercooler hanging out of the bottom. Had it not been for that this car would have made the perfect sleeper! It looks like the kind of car that you see a grandma driving to church on a sunday, but this certainly isn't the case. Even when they were brand new the RX3 was a highly capable machine!
FUN FACT: The RX3 was also released as a wagon! The idea of a retro japanese wagon with a screaming rotary is a dream come true to me!
The FC RX7 has a hint of sportiness to it with its hood scoop and big wheels, but other than that it looks like an everyday 80s hatchback that blends in with the traffic. But be careful when you pull up next to one at the lights! Even if you are in a modern sports car you may still be in for a surprise! The RX7 had 3 generations, known as the FB, FC and FD. All of them are relatively similar with some minor updates to suit the times. It is really tough to pick which one I like the most, when I see the FC's shark-like front end though I just fall in love!
Overall, these two legends have earned their reputation in many ways. Unfortunately, as rotary engines had incredible difficulty with their apex seals, they became unreliable. Mazda released the RX8 as their final rotary powered sports car and never looked back...... But now, rumours are circulating that mazda are experimenting with new rotary technology that runs on hydrogen! All we can do is cross our fingers and wait!
