MG Are Saying Farewell to the MG5

We are big fans of the MG5 here at Planetauto, and we have spent many hours having multiple funs in one on various road trips over the years.

Based on the Roewe i5, this fully electric estate car has been a favourite here in the UK, and has also won multiple awards due the combination of decent range and versatility due to it’s size.

Once we had seen – and driven – the MG4, it wasn't a big surprise to hear that MG have announced that this estate EV will be discontinued in 2025. We felt it was only a matter of time that MG would bring out an estate version of it. As the MG4 has been built on a brand new platform, it makes sense that there would be an estate version to follow on from the success that followed such a trailblazing EV.

When speaking with Auto Express, the head of product and planning for MG – David Allison – had this to say: “As soon as the MG4 came out, it killed the MG5” Whereas Ben and I firmly believe that there is enough need and want in the market for both the electric hatchback MG4 AND the reliable and versatile electric estate, the MG5.

While the MG5 may no longer be in production, its legacy as one of the UK's few electric estate cars will be remembered. It paved the way for more affordable electric vehicles and demonstrated that practicality and value can go hand in hand. As we bid farewell to the MG5, we look forward to the innovations and advancements that will continue to shape the future of electric mobility.

There is a silver lining for MG fans though, as there’s a lot to come – for starters, the Cyberster has arrived! It will be followed up by the arrival of MG’s second electric SUV, the Marvel R. Following this will be the arrival of the ES5, which will replace the current ZS EV.

One thing you can be sure of, MG are making the most of their centenary, and it was an amazing event that Ben and I got to see first hand at Goodwood FoS this year!

Ben and I are looking forward to seeing these cars in the flesh. We’re even starting 2025 with a bang, as we are heading out in the new HS PHEV in January for our first road trip of the New Year…we cannot wait!

Have you driven the MG5? Let us know what your choice of EV would be.

Thank you all, end enjoy!
