Exotic foods: Tasty Freakin’ good!

in #cebu7 years ago (edited)

My relatives went home from Nueva Ecija and brought me some “kinamatisang palaka”. When I offered this exotic dish to my mother – in - law she immediately says “No Thanks”. I wonder why? Ahaha

It is a farm frog cooked with tomato! Yum! It’s been so long since I’ve eaten this type of exotic dish.

This gives me an idea to write about exotic foods. It is quite interesting that each place in our country has its own story to tell and has various exotic food to offer.

I am an Ilocana and I grew up in the farm where this type of bizarre food is not new to me.
Looks can be deceiving (lols) , they might look disgusting but they are also worthy to be served!

1 Farm Frog

Best in Adobo:

2 Ararawan in Ilocano a.k.a Crickets

Best when you fry until crisp and also there is soft texture inside that is very juicy and it tastes delicious.
Catching these creature is not easy, we chase them in mud tailing the tractor when my father plow our field

3 Uok ( Bettle Larvae)

Bettle larvae sound appetizing but wait theres more! Ahahah
This mysterious worm can be found in coconut logs. They can send chill up to your spine. This earthy creature is best when cooked . Yes!.others eat it raw! They just dip it in vinegar, I suggest, at least boil it but adobo is the best recipe for this.

4 Kuhol (Snail) and Susu

Best in Ginataan

This one is what we pick in the river

You need to fill your lungs with air since you need to suck the opening of the shell at the topmost for the meat to come out. The tail should be cut before cooking to let the air pass through when you suck or blow.

5 Hantik (Ants’ eggs)

Fry until brown. It has soury milky taste (unexplainable) ahaha.

6 Salagubang

I haven’t try this one but as far as I know it is best when it's fried too. Remove the legs and wings but keep the head intact to keep their identity .(what???). ahahha

7 Snake (Philippine Cobra)

Adobo or fried .The taste still like the poultry animals. Naturally, people fear snakes but in our place it’s the other way around.(lols)

8 Bayawak aka Monitor Lizard

Best in Adobo.

I just hope they stop hunting this creature since its already endangered. Surprisingly, it taste like chicken.

9 Farm Rat

This is not Ratatouille so don’t curse me. Just to put your mind at ease if you are planning to eat this creature, it only eats rice from the field. It tastes like chicken as well.

Tip: When you eat this food, don’t imagine how they looks like, change your perspective. Just savor the moment
These are not domesticated, these are wildlife pests mostly destroys the crop.

Our rule is:
If you can’t get rid of them, eat them! lols

Are you up for the challenge to eat this kind of food, if you are given a chance?
I would love to know, what are some of the exotic foods you have tried so far?
Please feel free to comment.

Until next time
