Cuando en 2015, al rector de la estatal universidad venezolana formadora de educadores, UPEL*, Raúl López Sayago, se le ocurre otorgar al (buen) cantante del género "salsa latina" Óscar León Simosa (alias "Óscar D'León") un Doctorado Honoris Causa, aparte del desestimulo que ello significó para muchos doctores de verdad-verdad y muchos estudiantes de doctorado que a la sazón allí pujaban dignamente por formarse desde las aulas, llevó consigo -no obstante- una serie nutrida de discusiones caracterizada, más que todo, por el siguiente nudo conceptual (teleológico): ¿Qué es lo que debe caracterizar a un ciudadano que sin cursar formalmente un doctorado, le sea conferido por razones de honor universitario, el título del más alto nivel que el Alma Máter concibe? Tales discusiones trajeron a colación otros casos harto polémicos de doctorados honoríficos apuntados a políticos como el venezolano Hugo Chávez, el nicaragüense Anastasio Somoza Debayle, el español Francisco Franco, el paraguayo Alfredo Stroessner, el cubano Fidel Castro, etc. También pulularon en esa discusión, asuntos relacionados a otras premiaciones de honor las cuales sin ser propiamente universitarias, aportaron ajíes y pimientas, como por ejemplo, el brollo que generó en Reino Unido (1965), las medallas otorgadas a Los Beatles por la célebre monarca de esa poderosa y múltiplemente instalada nación con sede en Londres...

Con la sordera extrema que con asiduidad caracteriza a la gente que -en un momento dado- ostenta el poder (sea micro o macro; sea de aquí, allá o acullá), pues el referido rector de la UPEL (y el séquito de lo acompaña obedientemente en su gestión), pues apenas a 6 años después de tal ocurrencia, decide otorgar otro doctorado de la misma factura honorífica (ahora post mortem), pero dirigida a una referencia religiosa "a todas luces, militante". Se trata de un personaje venezolano de nombre José Gregorio Hernández Cisneros (1864-1919) el cual si bien es abiertamente reconocido en su país por su dedicación a la profesión médica trazando ahínco y filantropía (adicionalmente a la enseñanza), la cultura popular de su país le atribuye elementos sobre-naturales. Ello de un grado tal, que la iglesia católica venezolana está empeñada orgánicamente en convertir la respetable personalidad de Hernández Cisneros en lo que la fe de esa secta llama "santo". Es que cuando en la cultura popular venezolana se habla de José Gregorio Hernández, pues la gente lo vincula con fe espiritual, con milagros, con militancia católica.

This to such a degree that the Venezuelan Catholic Church is organically committed to turning the respectable personality of Hernández Cisneros into what the faith of that sect calls "saint." It is that when in Venezuelan popular culture they speak of José Gregorio Hernández, well, people associate him with spiritual faith, with miracles, with Catholic militancy.

No es difícil connotar que cuando el precitado rector y el obediente séquito que lo secunda, apuntan sus miradas de reconocimiento al fallecido personaje, pues lo que preponderan es el factor religioso en tanto militancia puntualmente católica; ello, sin ver que constitucionalmente Venezuela abraza la libertad religiosa y el Estado (¡y la universidad pública, claro!) no es confesional (tipo la actual Irán o la Libia del malogrado Muamar el Gadafi). Así lo vemos. Parece obvio connotar, pues, que ese rector y su obediente séquito, participan en esa línea tan popularmente instalada en la cultura popular venezolana, de ver a José Gregorio Hernández como "Venerable", "Siervo de Dios", más que por razones distintas.

It seems obvious to connote, therefore, that this rector and his obedient entourage, participate in that line so popularly installed in Venezuelan popular culture, to see José Gregorio Hernández as "Venerable", "Servant of God", more than for different reasons.

Ah, no concluyen allí las ocurrencias del rector de la UPEL y sus damas de apoyo (vice-rectoras y secretaria institucional)... Renovando todo género de desconsideración a los programas doctorales (casi una decena) que esa casa de estudios posee en buena lid a lo largo y ancho de la nación venezolana, pues esas ocurrentes Autoridades Universitarias deciden hace poquísimo tiempo conferirle el título Honoris Causa a un buen cantante folclórico conocido por el seudónimo "Rucio Moro" habida cuenta el título de una de las canciones exitosas y de un bar caraqueño que al parecer está asociado a sus aptitudes empresariales. Reynaldo Armas Enguaima es su nombre. (Inscritas en esa decadente onda, vienen inscribiéndose otras casas de estudio, como una que está ubicada en la región llanera de ese país y cuyo acrónimo es UNELLEZ**).

El cubano Fidel Castro ha sido "doctorado por honor" en diferentes ocasiones (universidades de Cuba, antigua Checoslovaquia, Ecuador, Nicaragua...). Ha sido "laureado" el español Francisco Franco (Universidad Santiago de Compostela). Tanto el chileno Augusto Pinochet como el paraguayo Alfredo Stroessner y el nicaragüense Anastasio Somoza Debayle fueron "doctorados" en la Universidad de Guadalajara. Este último, además en la Universidad Hahnemann de Estados Unidos y en el Instituto Centroamericano de Administración de Empresas (Nicaragua). El libio Muamar el Gadafi, en universidades de Serbia, Túnez...; el venezolano Hugo Chávez en universidades de Venezuela, Libia, Corea del Sur (vale decir, la del lado capitalista), Brasil, China, Chile... El boliviano Evo Morales en una universidad rusa...

El caso de Los Beatles, año 1965, aunque no estuvo referido a doctorados honoríficos probablemente venga aquí al caso; sobre todo porque se trata de una premiación que a la sazón fue altamente significativa en términos de poder estatal (el Reino Unido) y dado que el ente receptor encarnaba vivamente la farándula, la música popular, el pop, el rock, la algarabía masiva...

The case of The Beatles, year 1965, although it was not referred to honorary doctorates, is probably relevant here; above all because it is an award that at the time was highly significant in terms of state power (the United Kingdom) and given that the receiving entity vividly embodied show business, popular music, pop, rock, mass merriment.

Como sabemos, en tal año la Reina Isabel II confirió a este cuartero de Liverpool, unas preseas que simbolizaban uno de los más altos honores en materia estatal; a saber, "Orden del Imperio Británico", asignándoles a Paul, John, Ringo y George la condición de Miembros. Como quizá recordemos, tal situación generó un alboroto de dimensiones extremas; ello hasta el punto que no pocos ciudadanos de esa nación los cuales habían recibido en condiciones sobresalientes tales honores habida cuenta la respectiva participación en "la segunda guerra mundial", pues devolvieron sus apreciadas medallas simbolizando en tal acción, una protesta. Sí. Una protesta por el compartimiento con esos muchachos, tal honra nacional.

As we know, in that year Queen Elizabeth II conferred on this Liverpool cuartero, some medals that symbolized one of the highest honors in state affairs; namely "Order of the British Empire", assigning Paul, John, Ringo and George the status of Members. As we may remember, this situation generated an uproar of extreme dimensions; This to the point that not a few citizens of that nation who had received such honors in outstanding conditions given their respective participation in "World War II", returned their prized medals symbolizing such action, a protest. Yes. A protest for sharing with those boys, such a national honor.

ALGUNAS CONCLUSIONES PROVISIONALES PARA EL DEBATE...

SOME PROVISIONAL CONCLUSIONS FOR THE DEBATE...

1) El Doctorado es el título de mayor nivel que ofrece la institución universitaria. Cuando los doctores llevan a cabo jornadas formales de enseñanza-aprendizaje, en vez de que éstas se llamen "post-doctorales" han de denominarse codoctorales. Bien, aquellos títulos de Doctor que se entreguen por razones preponderantemente de honor, deben ser conferidos a ciudadanos del medio universitario que han honrado en condiciones sobresalientes alguna de las 3 temáticas propias de la producción intelectual; a saber, la ciencia, la tecnología y las humanidades. En la ciencia, es la objetivación el factor decidor. Ello en el entendido de que la comprobación fáctica es harto importante, pero no suficiente. En la tecnología, es la honra tanto a los conocimientos científicos que se tengan en el momento histórico en el cual se genere el instrumental, como a la jerarquización que se tenga del sentido histórico-concreto de utilidad de éste. En las humanidades, el asunto es mucho más complejo.

1)The Doctorate is the highest level degree offered by the university institution. When doctors carry out formal teaching-learning sessions, instead of being called "post-doctoral", they should be called co-doctoral. Well, those PhD degrees that are awarded for reasons predominantly of honor, must be conferred on citizens of the university environment who have honored in outstanding conditions any of the 3 themes of intellectual production; namely, science, technology and the humanities. In science, objectification is the deciding factor. This is with the understanding that factual verification is extremely important, but not sufficient. In technology, it is the honor both to the scientific knowledge that is had in the historical moment in which the instrumental is generated, as well as to the hierarchization that is had of the historical-concrete sense of its utility. In the humanities, the matter is much more complex.

2) Si habida cuenta lo aquí traído a colación, algo resulta con sentido, ese "algo" es que las humanidades no son "un todo vale"; no. No nos cabe duda que detrás de esos doctorados dizque laudatorios que aquí hemos citado a tenor de la farándula y de las volteretas circunstancialistas que da el poder social, ¡no hay figura de méritos especiales como para que la institución universitaria confiera la figura de Doctorado Honoris Causa.

2)If taking into account what has been brought up here, something makes sense, that "something" is that the humanities is not "anything goes"; No. We have no doubt that behind those so-called laudatory doctorates that we have cited here in light of the show business and the circumstantial somersaults that social power gives, there is no figure of special merits for the university institution to confer the figure of Honorary Doctorate! 3) Si bien es cierto que en el terreno de la música pop y rock no había existido en aquellos años '60s. una referencia mayor y mejor que Los Beatles, es verosímil estimar hoy por hoy que a la señora que reinó Inglaterra y países alineados a ésta, se le ocurrió -en aquel entonces- algo destemplado al conferirle una orden de tan alto nivel estatal, a un grupo de ciudadanos británicos que solo brillaron como músicos, como gente de espectáculos; no como gente activista de Estado.

4) Sería un disparate pensar que se le ofreciera en verdad un título de Doctor Honoris Causa a alguien a partir de una organización tipo Óscar, Grammy, Ariel, etc. También nos parece un desaguisado que haya universidades que zampen elementos de la farándula, la política inmediata y otros medios, a la suprema instancia universitaria de los títulos de Doctor Honoris Causa.

4)It would be nonsense to think that an Honoris Causa Doctorate would actually be offered to someone from an organization like Oscar, Grammy, Ariel, etc. It also seems to us a mess that there are universities that gobble up elements of show business, immediate politics and other media, to the highest university instance of Doctor Honoris Causa titles.

5) Para que un ciudadano del mundo universitario opte por un Doctorado Honoris Causa, no basta el talento; aun ni el producto por virtuoso sea. Es necesario que este ciudadano evalúe su producción intelectual, que la critique suficientemente.

5)For a citizen of the university world to opt for an Honoris Causa Doctorate, talent is not enough; not even the product is virtuous. It is necessary for this citizen to evaluate his intellectual production, to criticize it sufficiently.

6) Si bien es cierto que, por lo menos en Venezuela, la universidad pública nació (segunda década del siglo XVIII) bajo las égidas religiosa (católica) y monárquica (española), su comunidad llevó a cabo -aun así- una sostenida lucha en contra de ese par de rémoras históricas logrando emanciparse de ésas ya al final de la década 80 del siglo XIX. Tan heroica puja la liderizan el prócer civil, Dr. José María Vargas, y el prócer militar, Gral. Simón Bolívar. Ocurrencias como la que al principio de este artículo aludimos (caso José Gregorio Hernández y el rector López Sayago), van en contravía no solo con la historia sino con el principio genésico de la universidad pública venezolana. Así lo vemos.
