Selene, Greek Goddess of the Moon
The moon has always been admired. Her pale beauty and its imposing presence in the infinite inspire poets and lovers. In Greek mythology, Selene is the goddess of the Moon. She was daughter of the Titans Hyperion and Tea, and sister of Helios, the Sun, and of Eos, the Aurora. She was represented as a young and beautiful woman, who was traveling the sky in a silver carriage drawn by two horses.
Many romantic stories are known about her, she had a daughter with Zeus called Pandia. In Arcadia she was a lover of the god Pan, who gave him a herd of white oxen.
However, his best-known story is the one she shares with Endymion, a shepherd of Caria son of Etlio and Calice and grandson of Zeus. He had occupied the throne of Elida, but after being dethroned, he sought refuge in Mount Larmos and dedicated himself to the countryside and the stars, falling in love with the moon, the only company besides his solitude.
Every night, after performing his daily tasks, he slept soundly inside the cave that served as his dwelling. But if the weather was good, he lay naked by the cave door when he slept in the open air. Endymion contemplated Selene and her heart was nourished by a silent love, until falling asleep.
A night, Selene went down to earth and saw Endymion asleep and naked immediately fell in love with him. Since then, she visited him every night while he slept; she lay down next to him without waking him until dawn was approaching. Likewise, with asleep he and she awake, they loved each other for a long time.
Selene knew nothing about the great love she had inspired in the pastor; he did not know that during his dreams he became the goddess's object of love. Until a night Endymion woke up and knew he was the goddess lover. They both confessed to each other their secret love and happiness enveloped them.
But then he came into fear, since the time had passed and his body began to wither. He asked Selene to grant him eternal youth with her divine power so they can be together eternally. She went to Olympus and asked Zeus for that wish, and he decided that Endymion did not suffer old age while he was asleep; he would only grow old while awake.
Endymion made Selene promise to accompany him always while he slept. That way, he would not grow old and would always wake up happy. But then, she would not be.There is no concrete end to this story; the myth relates that probably Selene and Endymion love each other in silence somewhere on earth.
However, there are many versions of this story. One of them tells that fifty daughters were born from this love; another version states that they had a son named Naxo, hero of the island of Naxos, and another version says that Zeus does not allow them to be together since Endymion was a mortal and Selene was a goddess.
