Hi, resilient!
Today I will talk about a topic that can be crucial in our lives. Decision making can change our direction or push us towards our goals. Everyone wants to make the right decisions, however there are many times that we doubt and we are not clear about it. In this post I will also show you some tricks that you can use when you have doubts.
THE DECISIONS
We could simplify the types of decisions we make in 2 large groups. Decisions easy to make and decisions difficult to make, evidently there are many nuances that will depend on each individual.
The easy decisions to make are those in which one of the options is better than another, in these cases we have no problems in deciding. The difficult decisions are those in which we can not distinguish that one alternative is better than the others. For example: Do I study medicine or engineering? Do I start a relationship or do I start it?
In these cases there is no better option than the other, the alternatives will bring us different things. Although they are different, they give us an X value that we can not measure and this is where the doubts come in because the reason does not give us a clear answer.
THE DECISION MAKING
We can distinguish 3 ways to make decisions:
Rational: It is the most usual way, above all we use it when the alternatives are measurable. Our response is based on identifying what will bring us more benefits, either to us or to whom it may concern, and make the decision accordingly.
Impulsive: The impulsive way of making decisions refers to all those decisions that we make without carefully analyzing the PROs and CONTRAs. Many times the adrenaline and the circumstances push us to make decisions in this way. Others, just folly exceeds us.
Unconscious: The unconscious form is a bit more difficult to understand. Sometimes we make decisions without knowing exactly why we do it, our subconscious mind does its job and "pushes" us to make a concrete decision.
If all the decisions were easy, for example measurable decisions, and we used our rationality to take them, the world would be boring, as well as predictable and monotonous.
For this reason, I thank you for the difficult decisions that push us to address in the depths of our being and our values.
WHEN TO MAKE A DECISION?
The first advice that I am going to give you I have used many times with good results. This advice will not help you to select the best option, but I can promise you that it is very useful.
Many times we think that reflecting more will help us to take the best path, and this is not always the case. In many situations lengthening the decision does not help, it generates a state of worry and unnecessary anxiety and we have the key to solve it.
My biggest advice is that when you face a difficult decision you set a limit to take it and respect it. Although you do not have clear what is the best option, the simple fact of deciding will make your path easier and you can get to see if you were right or not. It's never too late to rectify.
THE TECHNIQUE 10-10-10
The second advice is extremely useful when selecting the best option in the face of a difficult decision. If I'm not mistaken, the method was designed by Suzy Welch in her book (10 minutes, 10 months, 10 years: a formula that will transform your life). I have not had the opportunity to read the book, however, I have been able to prove the effectiveness of this method since it was taught to me by a great friend.
The method consists in putting yourself in situation and imagining how we will feel in 10 minutes, 10 months and 10 years if we take that alternative. With this method we leave aside the present and go to the future to analyze what the results and consequences of our actions will be. So we can clearly see if they fit with our beliefs, our values and with the person we want to be.
As you can see the method is very simple and goes very well to solve those situations that cause us real headaches.
And you, how do you make difficult decisions? I would be happy to read you!
