Two days ago, I looked at my fiancé and said: "Huh, this will be the first time since 2017 that I won't have a birthday post on Steem/Hive. But I seriously don't have any idea for a fun challenge or anything. What would I make it about? Conspiracy theories about Covid19? Wait a minute ..."
And now here we are.
The challenge is aimed at all of you who are tired of explaining why herd immunity without a vaccine is a bad idea, why people should mask up, why 5G doesn't cause a viral infection.
I want you to pick a conspiracy theory and debunk it.
Rules
- Pick one conspiracy theory about Covid19
- Write a new post in which you describe
a) The conspiracy theory
b) Why it's wrong - Include references from peer-reviewed research! Without proper references, there is no point in debunking
- Pictures also need to be credited
- Link back to this, my birthday post and mention the challenge, so others can participate if they want
- Drop a link to your post in the comments of my post so I can find it
- This challenge ends 24th of September 2020, 23:59 Irish Standard Time (I'm testing the peakd.com timer feature, let's see how that works).
- Plagiarism automatically disqualifies you
- People who are known to plagiarise, trolls, spammers, generally the junk of this community are automatically disqualified
- English only
Optional: Tag your entry with the @stemsocial community tag #hive-196387
I will rate the posts by how accurate and well-written they are.
Prizes
You can win:
First Prize: 100 HIVE, 1000 HP Delegation
Second Prize: 60 HIVE, 600 HP Delegation
Third Prize: 40 HIVE, 400 HP Delegation
The Delegation will last at least a month, but probably longer because I keep forgetting to undelegate.
Delegation may be withdrawn if the winner abuses it.
If there are no adequate entries, the prizes will not be given out.

Happy Birthday and I am thinking of writing one but I'm afraid I am not smart enough to do something scientific.
I'll sit down on the weekend and read up on some articles I might want to incorporate on some local practices that were endorsed by some politicians who clearly did not do any scientific research or at least consulted someone with a brain.
I was so angry because I am a COVID 19 survivor and what they are encouraging people is downright dangerous.
It doesn't have to be a research paper as long as the information is correct and you use reliable sources!
Congrats on surviving covid, that must have been nasty!
Okay! Will try to write it. I already have a framework in mind and just need the relevant sources and information
Google scholar has a bunch of direct links to covid research papers on the landing page, in case you need a place to start https://scholar.google.com/
Awesome thank you for that resource link!
I have never really tried to write something scientific in nature before and the post I made turned out more political and ranting but I couldn't stop as if my frustrations from this pandemic and how it was treated surged forth.
It was good getting out from my comfort zone.
This is the post I created https://peakd.com/hive-196387/@maverickinvictus/we-should-not-worry-about-covid-19-and-why-this-statement-is-dangerous and although it did not fully followed the mechanics and format it is something I have put my thoughts into.
Thanks for the entry! I'll read it properly when I'm deciding on a winner (although you're the only entry so far), but I skimmed it and it Dienst look bad!
I am happy to have written it. COVID 19 has become something really personal for me since surviving it and it was a great chance for me to write something about it on a different context but somehow it still ended up political.
It could be because of a combination of it being personal, some cabin fever kicking in since being cooped up and the frustrations I have felt.
I gotta say when I hit the publish button it was cathartic.
I do really hope to see others submit entries as I would love to read their thoughts on debunking some of the odder theories out there. It is a great opportunity to share with the world.
Happy birthday. I hope there are some entries they should make extremely good reading especially the comments on the entries I think. Since I kind of like drama, but not being part of it, I think I will sit on the sidelines myself and look forward to the reading.
Thank you! And yes, there might be some drama headed my way lol
But look at the fun commentary it may provide.
Honestly, at this point I'm sitting here with a bucket of popcorn.
Dublin is currently headed into another lockdown because cases are rising exponentially, and deaths have started rising too together with hospital admissions. A friend who works in the emergency department told me about having to do CPR on someone with covid.
Everything that's happening rn was predicted. People still trying to tell me it's a hoax? Can go lick a rat.
I'm sure there is a lot on both sides of the fence, and very few fence sitters. I do pretty good at balancing on a fence. I see the stories the news reports from around the world and decide even though I do not like where I live right now, I am happy that I live in an area that has been pretty much untouched by the virus.
Got lucky there 😅 I'm mostly wondering how I'm supposed to do my PhD research under these circumstances
Extremely carefully, or wait for it to abate a little bit. They were telling everyone at the outset of the virus things would improve in the summer due to the heat, but it really did not. I am sure they, (the experts), will get a handle on it soon.
I also wonder about the fresh outbreaks, is it because people feel safer wearing a mask and the social distance has decreased, or are the type of mask being worn not effective at blocking the virus? I have seen a lot of so called covid mask on the market and they just seem to be made out of normal cotton.
Happy birthday!
Will I win a prize if I'll come up with a NEW conspiracy theory and it'll spread on the internet like wildfire?
Something like "Excess electrones in the power grid cause COVID-19 symptoms" etc. ;)
Hey, I can't claim to know every conspiracy theory
Happy birthday!
An interesting topic for a challenge, hope to see/read lots of good entries.
Enjoy your day!
🎂
Happy Birthday! :-D
Thank you!
Happy birthday suesa :))
Thank you!
Alles Gute zum Geburtstag!
Ich finde diese Challenge ist eine hervorragende Idee 😀
😁
Happy Birthday!
This is definitely not the easiest challenge. Will take some very amazing people (humble character, quality research, persuasive communicator) to present a good case on a premise they might not wholly agree with.
Think I'll abstain. Yes, I admit I enjoy clinging onto some baseless wild notions, though I don't really act on them. Anyone else feel awkward presenting arguments to support certain policies you generally dislike?
Don't worry, this isn't about supporting "certain policies" but instead it's about supporting proven facts by shooting down lies, false claims and baseless scaremongering.
But luckily nobody can force others to participate in a challenge like this.
Exactly :)
Or do they?
How about those secret camps in the mountains where people are forced to participate in science contests?
They always have an option.
They can choose DEATH!
Happy Birthday @suesa
🎉🎈🎂🎉🎈
Thank you!
Why am I just seeing this? Damn it. When is the deadline for entries? @suesa
Happy belated birthday to you nevertheless. I wish you success in all your endeavours
24th of September!
Oh. I will see what I can do before then.
