Testing Gear for Care Package 4.0: Electric Hand Warmers / Power Banks

in #charity7 years ago

If you recall, I looked at electric hand warmers for Care Package 3.0 but the ones I saw at the time offered pitiful run times of around two hours. I did a little more digging and discovered the higher end electric hand warmers have a (claimed) run time of as much as six hours.

Now that's more like it. Still only half of the whopping 12 hour run time of a normal Zippo hand warmer that runs on lighter fluid, but it's rechargeable from USB. They can plug it in to charge wherever they charge their phones, for free. Lighter fluid costs money.

The next factor to consider is that this electric hand warmer functions as a power bank. That's both a plus and a minus. On the upside, it means the ability to carry energy with which to recharge a smartphone, in the same unit that also warms your hands. This takes up less space in the care package than separate power banks and hand warmers.

However, it means they'll have to choose between staying warm and recharging their phone. It's 5,200mah which is nothing to sneeze at. They can probably use it for both without much trouble. However putting lithium batteries into something that heats up seems unwise, as at the very least, the heat will diminish the longevity of the batteries.

Is it worth a 50% reduction in runtime to combine the power bank and hand warmer into a single unit, eliminating the need to buy lighter fluid? That's going to depend on two factors: Whether it heats as effectively, and whether it really runs for 6 hours.

So I bought one for testing. At $21 it's a couple bucks cheaper than the combined price of the $13.47 regular hand warmer and the $13 or so it costs per single 18650 power bank. It doesn't heat as long as the regular, fuel burning hand warmer but it does store nearly twice as much energy as the power bank I included before.

It just got here today, so I have to charge it up first. But then I'll test out how long it actually heats for, on the highest setting. If It lives up to what the Amazon page promised, and you guys think it's a good idea, I may substitute this for the fuel burning hand warmer and single 18650 in Care Package 4.0.

Stay Cozy!

It's pretty interesting if Electric hand warmer can work as a power bank at the same time! If it could make energy by using the heat of hand then this device is unbeatable! Anyway this is a good addon of Care pack 3.0!@alexbeyman,

Cheers~

Did you said hand warmer, i fuckin need this thing. Most of time in whole day my hands feels so cold, specially my fingers when i go out for play.

I wonder how does it work. It works with a warm air stream (Like a hairdryer) or it's just a warm device where you can keep your hands.
You should try a nuclear fuel with a hand warmer!

I always wondered why don't car manufacturers build hand warmers around steering wheel. Wouldn't that be cool. I'm mean hot! :D
Nice article though.

They do. Many newer cars have heated steering wheels.

Does the picture of the hand warmer say Zippo on it? If so I didn't know they were into electronics.

Also I am wondering about the heat and the batteries. I know that my cell phone turns off when it gets too hot.

I didn't know either. And yes, that's my concern too. Although I think phones turn off to prevent damage to their circuitry rather than the battery, it still can't be good for it. I wonder how long these will last.

If the reviews don't say much you might have to trial it for longevity. I think you are right about the circuitry in phones being the bigger issue.

Alex - I like this combined option... Warm hands or use as a battery charger... It's a good deal Alex... They can use it either way...

Power banks are the best. You know what would be super epic is if you put a sticker that says "steemit power bank" on it!

@alexbeyman with most models offering capacities in between 4000 and 8000 mAh. By choosing a higher capacity you not only get to enjoy the warmth for longer before you have to recharge the device, but you can also benefit from the extra power if you have a mobile device, like a phone or a tablet, that needs a charge , there is some are Double-sided heat to make sure your hands are more evenly heated. This could be important to get a better overall experience :)

How do you distribute the care packages? I've seen a few of your posts about them but I haven't seen this aspect covered yet, do you drive around distributing them or drop them off somewhere? Sorry if this has been covered.
Keep up the good work dude.

I park my car, load the care packages in my backpack (I could fit 3 of the 2.0 ones, but only 1 of the 3.0, but I can also carry another 2 under my arms) and then walk around in search of people who look like they need them. I ask if they are without shelter/could use a little help, and if yes, give one of the packages to them.

That's awesome dude. You're the fucking guy, man.

It's true, I am both a guy and a man.

Nice post.I respect you very much because you contribute to steemit.I will do activities like you.I would like to extend the steemit.

But the winter is near, we have to prepare hand warmers. Also, ass warmers would be great to keep together with warmers for other parts!

It's looking like great features are in there... 👌 i wish i could have it 😞... btw thanks for share 👍☺

Amazing powerbank i need it 🙂😐😁 @alexbeyman have a good day sir

What is Brand....this power bank...
Actualy I'm never see combine the power bank and hand warmer into a single unit...

Smart post... @alexbeyman sir....

Zippo makes it.

looking Awsome bt i nevar sow this type powerbank @alexbeyman

@alexbeyman For the most part it would be useless to people arriving there from earth, at least as a fossil fuel. As there is no oxygen to burn and make the fuel useful.

Perhaps tribologists would love it as its only useful property would be lubrication.

I think you should test a few out until you find the “right one “ I thought all there was one is gloves that warm your hands

Yes, but heated gloves start at around $200. This hand warmer is about 1/10th that amount.

That’s true .. maybe if Steem reaches $20 lol I’ll buy them next winter

It's really cool @alexbeyman, with the Power Banks released it really helped me, while traveling away, I always use Power Banks to refresh my phone. But the Power Banks you share are much different from what I have. Is this new in release? Thank you... :)

I don't know.

Anything that keeps carbon away is good for starters

that look amazing naver saw

Thanksfor sharing the post with all of us. @alexbeyman

Testing Gear for Care Package 4.0: Electric Hand Warmers / Power Banks

Wow Alex, that's seems like it on an another level of technology i haven't seen a combination of both these things so kind of really interesting to me but the running time on it is really insane  12 hour run time of a normal Zippo hand warmer   That's more than my two power banks combined together & the plus and the minus has to be with any technological thing so this is not out of that league for sure but definitely did some amazing work both things at the same time staying warm while charging on the go :)

Have a great day ahead

Cheers.

"oh shit, our battery gets too hot when costumers will load their smartphones with it!"
"lol dude, lets just call it a handwarmer with additional loading function, they'll never notice"

a very useful post
