Companies profit far less if they allow cheating to prosper, because genuine players get all snarky about it, which is usually entirely fair.
but there's a spectrum of how annoyed people are about it. Makers of the cheat tools are sued by the companies, people who make the cheats see financial ruin and media coverage of these matters helps to quell some people from making cheats. Simultaneously companies have to attempt to ban cheaters from their games, often imposing hardware ID and IP bans
In my mind, this is no more effective than the government doing it. The point is that some people ruin other people's fun, by breaking the rules/TOS. and that those people should have consequences. for those people to have real consequences, they have to be identified. and the only group of people allowed to carry the identification is the government. I can respect that if players are compensated having cheating happen in their games when companies fail to take action. Only then companies can sue cheaters for damages.
to win, you need skill, experience, luck, team work.
Sometimes you know you are screwed from minute 1.
But sometimes you know you had a chance.
