The city has now become a major center of outsourcing work from the West. The 12 km-long Marina Sea Beach, on the east coast of the city, is one of the longest beaches in the world. Chennai's old name Madras originates from Madrasajapatnam. In 1639, the British East India Company selected Madraspattnom for establishing a permanent colony. Located on the south of a village named Chennaiapatnam. Later these two cities were merged and the British preferred to be known as Madras. However, local people referred to the city as Chennai or Chennai.
