In August 1996, the name of the city was changed from Madras to Chennai:
, because the word Madras was thought to be parochial. It was thought that the word was derived from the name of the Portuguese Madras-D-Soues, the first person to start living permanently in the area. But some people think that the word Madras is derived from the original words of Tamil, rather than the other word of the Chinese.
History:
Temple of Copalish in Milapor, built by Pallab kings in the seventh century
The neighboring region of Chennai has played an important role as an administrative, military, and economic center since the first century. This region was under the control of several historic South Indian states, such as Pallava, Chol, Pandya, and Vijayanagar empire. The city of Milepore, which is part of the current Chennai city, was once an important port of the Pallab kingdom.
The Portuguese arrived here in 1522. The Portuguese constructed a port named São Tomé. In 1612, the region went to the Dutch, who established themselves near the city of pulicut.
