Our new chickens have yet to learn where to go for the night. The two of us trying to round them up this evening was much like this.
Our last set had to contend with the rooster until he "disappeared" so they learned to avoid him by finding sleeping places like on top of the car ( what a mess that poop mobile was driving around town), or right at the front door (joy to step out into their leavings), or in a leanto that we made by propping a piece of plywood against the house, or on the railing of one of the decks, to finally a high ledge above that deck that holds the chimney pipe in place. Lee still finds that her preferred place and will, no doubt, return to it what she is let out of the henhouse in a few weeks.
Ours roost happily in their coop. It's getting easier to get them back in the run after we let them roam the garden. They know where their food is. Their poop should fertilise the lawn.
Our first ones did too.
They should just naturally come home to roost at sunset.
Last year those chickens were a weird lot.
Got the same problem at my house.
Git that chicken. Go'on -- git'em!!
