The method for "click to enlarge" pictures came from @juliank https://steemit.com/blog/@juliank/happy-tuesday-steemit-share-your-landscape-photography, but I had to get it to work through trial and error, so I thought I would try to elaborate here.
Images may simply be drag-and-dropped onto your post from your hard drive - DON'T move the cursor while the image is uploading. This will automatically generate the MarkDown code to display the picture. No further work is necessary, unless you want to have a "click to enlarge" picture.
GUI's other than Steemit (e.g., chainbb) may not support the drag-and-drop feature.
OR they may be uploaded to https://imgsafe.org/
Once the image has a URL, simply enter the URL straight, or with associated text -
For a "click to enlarge" picture -

For a SteemIt drag-and-drop, "click to enlarge" picture, first enter a left bracket ("[").
LEAVE THE CURSOR WHERE IT IS. Drag-and-drop a picture to that point. Once the picture has uploaded, highlight the URL, including the parentheses. COPY the steemitimages.com URL with parentheses. Hit the 'right arrow' to UNSELECT. Enter a right bracket ("]"). Then PASTE the URL with parentheses.
It should look like this -
