We keep preaching this message of the Lord's great return, so bad many individuals don't believe in this. A friend who is an atheist once told me that this message has been heard for centuries upon centuries yet people are still preaching and waiting, he claimed not to believe the message. I just told him that no one can predict the Lord's time, and according to the scripture, one day is like a thousand years before God 2 Peter 3:8.
I won't be like Thomas who still doubted even when he was with Jesus, @jdbry thanks for sharing this verse.
I think verse 3-5 apply to this very thing:
"Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:"
It seems to me this is why we are seeing so many people that just can't seem to see the truth, even though it is blatantly obvious to those who have the Holy Spirit.
