When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.
Isaiah 43:2
The same fire that is used to make cotton cloth can also be used to destroy it. This is exactly what the trials a believer goes through can do to him; it can either make or destroy him.
It is God's ultimate purpose for every believer to be conformed to the fullness of Christ who amongst many other things is patient and full of faith.
For this reason, even though we are the redeemed of God, He still permits us to pass through various trials not so that we are destroyed but rather, that we are built. The assurance He gives to us however during such times is that He would be with us(Psalm 91:15) and not let the trials destroy us(Isaiah 43:2).
Trials therefore do not necessarily mean one has done anything against God or is recieving a punishment for some wrong actions as perceived by some. It is just a mark that we are indeed sons of God(Hebrews 12:6).
