Topic: Becoming Your Purpose: Forget Me Not
Passage: Ecclesiastes 2:1-11
Focus: Ecclesiastes 1: 2

Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.

What is the primary purpose of a man? I can understand what the preacher in the book of Ecclesiastes means by saying everything in life is vanity upon vanity. At a time, I asked myself: is this life really worth living?

Imagine a baby given birth to, the child come to the world naked and crying. He started growing through the struggles of life. From the task of learning how to sit, stand, walk and run which is characterized with several challenges and falling, to the task of going through schooling and doing home chores. You mustn't get late to school, you mustn't fail in doing your assignment and at same time, you must fight hard to be at the top of your class. If you come from this part of the world, you are expected to write entrance exams to get a space in the limited universities. When you pass through that you face the hurdles of lectures, assignment, projects, exams, fellowship, friendship and so on. As soon as you are about to finish your first degree, your parents expect you to come home with your future partner. If you don't have one especially if you are a female, you become a prayer project even when it doesn't really matter.

Congratulations. The young child of twenty-five years ago is now a graduate and has a good job, soonest, he would be married. He got married to a good lady and then the struggle continues. You have to wake all night to think about how to go about your schedule for the day and you are out of bed by 6am prepared to set out for work. The wife dare not wake that late because she is saddled with the additional task of dressing the kids for school.

You were a child being tossed care of several years ago but now you have become a parent running around for the care of your own children and soonest those children got married and depart their various ways. Then, you become old, useless and die. On your burial, they summarized your life in few paragraphs as I have done right now. Let me ask you: in all of those activities which one is worth living for? To me, if all that is the purpose of living then living isn’t worth it and it’s indeed vanity upon vanity.

The song says:
Fading away like the stars of the morning
Only remembered for what they have done.

I concluded that only two things are actually worth living for and that has been my consolation to wake up and live every day. I will talk about those two things in the next series, next Monday.

PYP: Father, let me find the true purpose of living.
