Ashley Montagu claims that skin is our largest and most powerful sense organ. It has an average surface of 18 square
feet and contains millions of sensory cells. yet touching is one of the least examined forms of non verbal communication
by not touching individuals we physically isolate them, or deny their hunger for touch. Each of us need physical touch.
However, our culture seems to pride itself on intellect and downgrades feelings.
Research suggests that the lack of touch in our culture may have a negative effect in our health. Lack of touching appear
to be a significant factor in stress, anxiety, and illness.
Sick people who touch and are touched reportedly gets well quickly. Psychologist says ; Being touched in ways which are respectful, aware and tenderly full of caring can be healing one of the most therapeutic things a person can experience. persistent denial of skin hunger frequently results in depression. People who have the skin hunger need satisfactorily met are demonstrably far healthier.
Jesus sent His disciples out to preach and to heal. A number of holistic therapists include the "Laying of hands" as part of their healing practice. However, today's church is ignoring the potential of touch in its mission.
