We need to be righteous people in order for our prayers to be effective.

If we are married men we need to be treating our wives properly.

We should spend a significant amount of time praying for others.

You should pray for the spiritual growth of your fellow believers.
(Ephesians 3:16-19 NIV) I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, {17} so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.
