I've had this debate with many friends that are religious. I have found my way away from religion as well by questioning and understanding the philosophy of Voluntaryism/Anarcho-capitalism. I grew up Catholic and it never really felt right to me. However.... I don't entirely discredit religion, as it may have a benefit for some, and can give you a community of people with common values striving to live morally. I do believe that leaders in many Christian churches have treated them like businesses and distorted the core message that Christ was trying to get across. Most preach a form of salvation Christianity where just believing in Christ will bring you into heaven. I believe this leads people to think if I don't buck the system and just go to church It will be enough. I don't think that was the message Jesus was trying to teach. He was trying to teach that we must have courage to seek the truth, stand up against evil, grow, find love and peace within ourselves on the path to self actualization. Not to sit idly by and be passive while evil prevails in the world.
