On this day, May 13, 1981, Pope John Paul II was the victim of an assassination attempt against him by Turkish terrorist and convicted murderer, Mehmet Ali Agca. The Pope was shot at St. Peter’s Square in Rome while he was openly interacting with the crowd.
Mehmet Ali Agca was later forgiven by the Pope and pardoned by the Italian President.
One year after the assassination attempt, the Pope was attacked again, this time by a fanatical priest during a visit to Fatima in 1982
