Bible Text: Acts. 6:3-6
Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the
Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. But we will give
ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word. And the saying pleased
the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost,
and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch: Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed,
they laid their hands on them
EXPLAINATION
In a bid to correct the murmuring that arose as a result of the neglect of the Grecian widows,
the disciples took a decision to appoint seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and
wisdom to take care of the business of serving tables, so as to enable them give more time to
prayer and the ministering of God's word.Even though the business of serving tables seemed
mundane, the disciples insisted on selecting men who had an honest report and were full of
the Holy Ghost. This therefore means that the reputation of the seven men that were selected
had preceded them for being honest and full of the Holy Ghost. It is important to point out that
reputation is not built overnight, and these disciples must have been faithful in handling little things and were found to be, not only faithful but honest without neglecting their spiritual lives.
We live in times when honesty is a rare commodity even in the church.Apart from this, there is a general belief that being full of the Holy Ghost is reserved for pastors, church leaders or the
prayer department, which has led to the average Christian becoming lazy with regards to
prayer, fasting and the study of God's word. We need to come to terms with the fact that we
are in God's army and we are at war with the kingdom of darkness. As a result of this we need
to remain continuously in the place of fasting, prayer and the study of God's word in order that
we may occupy till Jesus comes back
Prayer
Father, I make a commitment to dedicate my life to the study of YOUR word, prayer and fasting in Jesus name. I make a commitment to be faithful to GOD's work and whatever task HE assigns to me in Jesus name.
No, we're not part of God's army. The verse you quoted has nothing to do with an army. The word "army" only occurs twice in the New Testament. Once in one of Jesus's parables and the other in Revelation 19.
Fasting is mentioned in the New Testament. It was part of the culture of the Jewish believers but there's no command to do so.
