The seed of prosperity: Biblical career guidance

Whose guidance do you follow when it comes to career decisions? Do you yield to peer pressure, parental and or societal prescriptions? Well, the good news is that, God has a plan for our lives and has actually deposited the seed for prosperity within us. Check out the Scriptures below: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares he LORD, “plans to prosper you and not  to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11; NIV); “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10; NIV). “So how do I know God’s plan for my career,” you may ask. Well, the story of creation shows us that God always provides the seed or means to enable his purposes. For the propagation of plants this is what he decreed: “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds” (Genesis 1:11; NIV). For you to correctly diagnose the seed for your own prosperity, check out the things or professions you are passionate about. Also consider your talents, gifts or capabilities. Never bow to external pressure! Furthermore, the parable of the talents shows us that we have different abilities (talents): “And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey (Mathew 25:15; NKJV). Please do not even try to do the things that you neither have the passion for nor the ability to do, because you will fail dismally! Career success is contingent upon the diligent pursuit of careers that exploit our passions, talents and capabilities, as the parable of the talents shows: “Then he who had received five talents went and traded with them and made another five talents. And likewise he who had received two talents gained two more also. But he who had received one went and dug in the ground and hid his lord’s money” (Mathew 25:16-18; NKJV). The above-mentioned parable also shows us that we are stewards who have been entrusted with certain passions, talents and abilities for the pursuit of careers that are meant to benefit God’s creation. If we fail to pursue those careers that God has predestined for us, we shall be held accountable for our sin of omission, as the fate of the servant who did not invest his master’s money reveals: “And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth” (Matthew 25:30; NKJV). We should therefore not let the seed of our prosperity lie idle or waste away. We should rather plant, water and nurture it so that it grows and bears fruit for humanity. Stay blessed!
