A few facts about Christmas Cards
Everyone receives them and we send them because it's an old tradition, so where did they come from and what is the history.
The first commercial Christmas card was devised and sent by a Mr Henry Hole as far back as 1843. He sold the cards for a shilling and was an English inventor.
Postmen were often known as Robins because of their bright red uniforms so Robins became a motif associated with Christmas.
Christmas Cards are the biggest selling cards in a year.
60% of all cards sold are Christmas Cards and over 33% of cards feature snowmen, shopping, reindeer and have a religious theme.
In America it began in 1881 with a guy named Louis Prang who was a printer and produced the first commercially available Christmas cards.
President Eisenhower sent the first official White House Christmas card in 1953. The few cards signed by President Kennedy before his assassination are some of the most valuable Christmas cards ever written.
