The Great Silence, 1968 spaghetti western by Sergio Corbucci, takes the cake for having the most shocking ending in history of cinema. This was something that wasn't supposed to happen in westerns. Corbucci, known for his leftist views, later explained that he had done it deliberately with intention to shock people into thinking about film's anti-capitalist message and spur them into action in real life.
