Inspired from Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew", the movie entails two sisters - Bianca Stratford (Larisa Oleynik) & Katarina (Julia Stiles). Former being the younger one and has many admirers and Kat is unpopular, shows no interest in dating and is quite smart.
Their father Walter Stratford (Larry Miller) has forbidden Bianca from dating until her old sister starts to. But are two boys who really want to take Bianca to the prom, one being the nice guy but a bit shy and another being a gasconade. So they induce Patrick (Heath Ledger) , the school fugitive to win her over and take her to prom for $300 bribe, so that they can try their luck with Bianca.
Patrick starts faking as lover boy but after knowing her, he actually falls in love with her. The film involves comedy which really blends in well like English teacher, Mr. Morgan (Daryl Mitchell) performs Shakespeare's sonnet as if it's rap lyrics and school counsellor, Mrs. Perky (Allison Janney) is a erotic story writer.
And the ever predicted prom night scenes of dressed drunk teenagers dancing, enjoying, some fighting, some eager for their first kiss to happen, some for first sex and some just meaningless sex. Pretty much prom night is same in every movie. And here Patrick's truth is revealed and full on drama and emotional blow up.
Eventually he will win over his love and you know this predictable ending. Bianca also falls in love with the nice guy but only after she understands not everything that glitters is gold. But you still keep hooked on to the movie because keep aside the story line, the performance given by the actors is really appreciable-they totally got into the character.
Well before ending this review, this movie is more of High School Romance Genre rather that of Romance-Comedy.
