in portuguese "aprecie com calma" means "enjoy calmly"
Greetings from Brazil to all my dear friends at Hive who are crazy about coffee!
As I mentioned before, I have been exploring some cafes in my hometown. This was a way I found to rediscover the city where I was born and to get out of the isolation since I lived far away for a long time and the pandemic didn't let me explore much around here.
In Brazil, it is not very common to find cafes that are dedicated only to this incredible black drink. In general, what you will find here are cake shops, bakeries, and patisseries that also serve coffee. However, as you can imagine, in most of these places coffee is more of a "supporting actor" than the "main actor". But, thankfully, there are exceptions...
One of these places that has delicious pastries and a wonderful espresso is Delina Delícia, a nice and artistic little cafe located near the bus station in my city. Last week, coming back from a trip, I couldn't resist the smell of roll cake coming from the place and decided to take a short break.
I share a little bit of this experience here, with you my friends from Hive! By the way, can anyone here smell this full-bodied espresso?
Delina Delícia Café and the roll cake
Delina is one of those super charming cafes that invite you to stay a while longer. All the decoration of the space is made with handicraft pieces typical from the Brazilian northeast, which means that everything there is super rustic and colorful.
The decoration has to do with the "main character" of the cafe, which is the "bolo de rolo" or "rolling cake" translating to English. This northeastern Brazilian delicacy is nothing more than a thin sponge cake traditionally filled with guava jelly. At Delina, however, you can find various flavors of bolo de rolo, from Sicilian lemon, chocolate, and corn, among others.
they also sell some handcraft that are typical from the northeast of Brazil
The history of the roll cake ("bolo de rolo")
The "bolo de rolo", or simply "the roll cake" is well known in the northeast of Brazil. It is a very thin sponge cake, rolled millimeter by millimeter with guava. In the state of Pernambuco this cake has cultural heritage status and is very popular there.
The bolo de rolo has its origins in colonial Brazil and was brought by the Portuguese. When they arrived here, starting in the 16th century, the colonizers came to cultivate sugar cane, but they also brought the Portuguese culture and their pastries with them. The Portuguese cousin of the bolo de rolo is called "colchão de noiva" ("bridal mattress") and is also a kind of cake but filled with an almond cream.
Almonds are not at all common in Brazil, so in their place the Brazilians put "goiabada", a kind of thick jelly made from guava, and sprinkle sugar over the final result.
In colonial Brazil, the bolo de rolo was wrapped in banana leaf. Today, however, it is more common to find thin slices wrapped in a piece of plastic.
A slow and strong espresso
Besides the bolo de rolo, the espresso is full-bodied and well-drawn! Definitely a real Brazilian espresso, very acid and energetic. I also loved this cup written "enjoy calmly" made of ceramic.
I am very happy to make these discoveries around my hometown and I confess that the coffees have been surprising me a lot!
See you guys next time! NHAC!

Delina is a sweet and coffee stop with a nice interior. I also liked the colorful products found in the bookshelves.

Love a good cup of coffee! I had to slow down on coffee cause my stomach started feeling not so well after drinking way too much of it haha but I definitely do enjoy a cup of quality coffee every now and then. It's evening now but really want a cup of coffee after reading this omg haha!
hahah I'm slowing with coffee too, since I had a diagnosis of endometriosis... So, I got your feeling! Try to make coffee as an special event, like sweets. Not everyday, but when you go for it, make sure to get a good one!
That's exactly what I started doing 👏 A cup of real good coffee, as a treat! 😋
