Getting lost in this city is fairly easy. Crowded, wildly branched roads, colorful neon signs and thousands of different faces, which stand out for a moment, before they sink in the rushing human stream and be swept along. For many people, this environment seems overwhelmed and chaotic, even uninhabitable, like those city utopias that you might know from the rainy “Blade Runner” scenes.
Speaking for me, I always felt comfortable in big cities. Growing up in a small town, I imagine to live an exiting life in the midst of all the hustle and bustle, between high skyscrapers and croaking subway tracks. Tokyo was always a perfect symbol for a loud, colorful and never sleeping beast of a wild city. With nights you get lost in and reappear three days later, totally broke, blurry scenes floating past your eyes and memories of a crazy colorful trip through the night.
I wanted to be Oscar in “Enter the Void”, passing out on DMT and hover through the Tokyo underground. Or be like Bob Harris, sitting at the hotel bar, melancholic in a black suit, the skyline of the Nishi-Shinjuku district in the background, waiting for Charlotte. “I woke up sad in Tokyo; and in a dream i saw you on my front door; clicked your heels and your red shoes; and now I find myself right next to you”, sang Matt Costa and i was finally there, in Tokyo, between all the rushing cars and people, the garish twitching signs for sex shows and special priced beer, midst the beast, getting lost, but with a feeling of satisfaction and joyful excitement.
