Previously, @htliao wrote an article on silver metal, I am not a good investor, but silver are good stuff, so BUY!! The article also contained a lot of science about silver. Even though I specialized in biology related discipline, I also have some knowledge in chemistry, so I would like to make use of this opportunity to share some interesting about silver in this article.
之前看到 @htliao 寫了一篇講銀的文章,投資的我不大懂,反正就是好東西, 買!! 文章也包含了很多關於銀的科學知識,雖然我主攻生物,但化學的也略有” 所聞”, 所以也希望籍住這篇文章,可以更詳細指出固中有趣的東西。
Most of the time, we refer silver as the metallic silver. It is one of the precious metals found in the periodic table. Due to the high stability of elemental silver, it exist as silver metal in the ore. Still, silver could exist in different form, and one of the common form is silver ion.
白銀其實就是指金屬銀,元素周期表内的貴金屬之一。由於銀元素非常穩定,所以很多時候在礦石中它已經是以金屬的形式存在。雖然如此,銀依然可以以其他不同的方式呈現出來,其中一個常見的形式就是以銀離形式存在。
I am sure everyone have seen silver metal, which is a shiny metal. Yet, when silver exists as an ion, it becomes colorless. A good example would be silver nitrate, It is a silver(I) salt and it exist as a transparent salt. Because it is a nitrate salt, it have a high solubility in water; and once dissolved in water, it will give a colorless solution. So even though silver ions were originated from metallic silver, they share completely different properties (well, the common property they share would definitely be the price)
金屬銀是閃光泛泛的,相信大家都一定有見過。但銀當以離子形式存在時,它就變成無色的離子。就如硝酸銀就是含有銀(I)離子的鹽。在常溫下,它是透明的固體。由於是硝酸離子化合物,它都是有很好的水溶性,而溶在水后會得出透明溶液。所以銀離子雖然是由金屬銀做出來,但特性完全不一樣(共通點都是那麽貴)
Aside from being a precious metal and used as ornaments, silver doesn't have much application in our daily life. On the other hand, silver ion have way more interesting use.
其實白銀除了以貴金屬與飾物的用途外,在生活上都沒有太多的實際用途,反而銀離子就有很多特別的用途。
@htliao had described an interesting properties of silver ion that is its ability to kill bacteria at a very low dosage. In the ancient kingdom, the noble use silver container to carry their food and drinks. In the later time, people found that those food carried by silver container have almost no bacteria.
@htliao 也有講到銀離子可以作殺菌用,十分有趣。在古代的王國中,貴族都會用到銀做的杯去盛載飲料,而人們之後發現這些飲料都幾乎沒有細菌能在内生存。
The bactericidal effect has nothing to do with metallic silver, but instead, it is the silver ion that does the trick. In solution, silver metal will release trace amount of silver ion. Although the concentrations and amount are extremely low, it is already sufficient to kill bacteria. The actual mechanism is still debatable, but one had been describing silver could damage bacterial cell membrane and disrupt their basic function. As a result, quite a number of antiperspirant had add silver ion with it.
這其實不是因爲金屬銀能殺菌,而是在飲料中,金屬銀會析出銀離子,儘管那個量是非常非常少,但都已經足以把細菌殺死!雖然現在很多人都不知道銀離子是如何殺菌,但有研究指出銀離子會破壞細菌的細胞膜,然後再破壞細菌的基本運作。所以現在很多止汗噴霧都加入了銀離子!
To summarize, silver metals and silver ions are actually is still silver but they behaves differently with different properties.
金屬銀和銀離子其實都是元素銀的不同呈現的方式,而且帶著很不同的特性~

Yep the net concentrations are low, but the microscopic concentrations around the surface of the silver actually get very high. So microbes attaching to the surface will quickly be overwhelmed :)
AFIK, copper is thought to work in a sort of similar (ion release) but also quite different (generation of reactive oxygen species) mechanism.
Thank you for your extra information~ That's also explains why nano silver particles are working so well too maybe~ increase in surface area by a lot lol
Silver nano particles have some toxicity issues for this same silver leaching phenomenological reason.
