It's convenience morality. People cry rivers over dogs and cats being abused because our society frowns on eating them, so protesting such abuse doesn't require them to change their own lifestyle, but they look the other way on factory farm abuse because standing up for cows, pigs, and chickens would mean having to make changes in their lives that they're not willing to make.
