We purchased our house just a few years ago. The housing market is a bit competitive where we live and it has gotten even more so since we've moved in. As a bit of honesty, we overlooked some issues with the house due to the great screened in porch (The Oasis), the extra porch (The Grilling Deck), the large utility room and the big backyard. The back and front yards looked really well maintained and the flower garden in front was very nice. We figured they had a dog, but not a large dog. Again, we overlooked some things when we purchased the house.
Now, a few seasons in, I am annoyed with many things that are growing in the garden. I have just spent my second Saturday morning in a row weeding mimosa weed from the flower garden. Yes, I weeded them all out last week and there were more this week. It is a very annoying plant. I was told last year that there used to be a large mimosa tree in the yard. I assume it was in the backyard, because there is a hole that has formed where a stump was. But, I don't know. Most of the mimosa weed shows up in the front yard. I have also weeded out Creeping Charlie and Sorrel Weed (I call it sour clover), which both keep coming back. And of course, I have crab grass taking over both yards now. It would seem that the yard maintenance was done probably the week before they put the house on sale and we bought it the day it went on sale.
If I had the money, I would have everything ripped out to the clay and start with some new soil.
Of all the things left by the previous owners, the ornamental grass is something that I don't mind. It isn't out of control and it has very pretty flowers. Sure, it might hide a few weeds, but it is better looking than the alternative.
When you plant a garden or bring a plant in the yard, you should really think about the long term affect the plant will have on everything. Mimosa, English Ivy and Kudzu should have never been brought over. The climate that they are used to keep them at bay. But, here in the south, they find it as a wonderful growing heaven and take over everything. I wonder if in 100 years, there will only be Mimosa, English Ivy and Kudzu left in the south.
Planning for the long term is important in almost every aspect of life. Just like planting a small seed gives you a large plant years from now. Planting a small seed idea in your children will hopefully influence them later. My daughter helped me weed the plants this morning and I told her about cutting old blooms in order for new blooms to grow. She in turn explained the process to her mother. Seed planted.

Well, I finally had a bit of success with trying to capture purple flowers in my garden. I set my camera to manual and set the light meter to spot. That seemed to help, but I still had to do some adjustment.
