RE: Sunday Purple! / Potato Flower

in #colorchallenge7 years ago (edited)

Oh what happened?
We grew two kinds of purple potatoes last year and even tho we didnt get them in to the ground until early mid june we got a small harvest. I raked the soil into mounds before setting the potatoes down but this year we will start the foundation of a no dig garden, so we will rake up the mounds, put the potatoes down and cover with straw mulch.
We also had some potatoes growimg in buckets, i filled with soil as they grew larger but strangely enough they never bloomed - tho we did get potatoes from them

Sort:

This is what we grew potatoes in, we had 8 of these towers and when we harvested only one tower had a potato above the first tire. We did get a harvest... it wasn't what we were expecting. What we think happened was two things. First, we piled the dirt around the plant and not on top of the leafs. Second, we needed more nutrient rich dirt of compost. We are definitely more prepared for this spring. If you have any suggestions we would be happy to here them. Thanks for the comment.

Ohh I see. Did you start with putting the potato seedling with sprouts at the bottom of the 1st tire and then fill up with dirt as the stalks grew?

I posted a link for a step by step guide for growing potatoes in containers, perhaps there will be something useful in there? Seeing your purple potato flower inspired me to write a post about our potatoes last year - https://steemit.com/gardening/@elfmyselfandi/purple-potatoes-last-years-adventure-and-new-plans

Its pretty nifty, as the potato stalks grow you fill with soil and board the sides up :D
Thanks for the inspiration, love that purple flower!!I would recomend a different kind of container, as you water whatever chemicals are in those tires will leak into the soild and the potatoes. Here is a short guide of how to make a wooden grow box for potatoes http://www.vegetablegardener.com/item/14721/build-your-own-potato-growing-box
