I loved kites when I was little. This scene reminded me of box kites, the weirdest kind of kites! And yes, this scene was captured inside a sphere with a virtual camera. I "exploded" a sphere into parts, then thickened the floating pieces into boxes, and then sliced the pieces with a striped stencil. The material I assigned to the parts was red on one side, and white on the other side. Lastly i added a blue sky to go with the kite theme.
I call this method "spherical art" because it captures scenes from inside a 3D sphere. You can see more examples at sphericalart.com.
