I've been fortunate enough to have traveled on Safari twice, and count myself lucky for both of these wonderul experiences.
This particular picture of a Lioness was taken in Tanzania, 3 years ago. Our guide had skillfully found the pride, just as they were beginning to wake up for their nighttime hunt. There's nothing quite like being in the presence of a wild animal, knowing that you are on their territory and that they are in control.
Every time I look at this photo, I can remember how it felt with her looking straight at me. The moment of recognition and understanding was clear, and I felt almost rude taking a photo without her permission. The guides maintain that the Lions can't separate the shape of the jeep from a human, but when one locks eyes with you it's hard to think that!
I love the different hues of orange in her coat, the intense orange and amber of eyes, and pride in her stance.
