Make a colored pencil bowl!

in #colored7 years ago (edited)

First, the finished product: 20+ hours mixing resin, shaping, sanding.

The resin that was used for this project.

Nail polish was used to give the resin some color. This bowl used a black nail polish, but any color will do! It'll just give it some nice features.

75 boxes of pencils... Yes, it took all 750 pencils to make this bowl.

You'll need some way to hold the pencils in place. A pot and some rubber bands are used here to keep the pencils bunched up. Don't worry about the rubber bands they can be sanded/shaped (with a lathe) off later.

It takes a lot of resin and steering will cost you some energy, a stiring drill bit would do the trick!

After the nail polish was added.

Place the pencils in something that will hold after pouring the resin with it and can be cut as well like a potting pot. (the holes in this potting pot where duct taped)

When pouring, please remind yourself to pour straight over the pencils so all the resin can get between them! Be careful, the pencils will float in the resin, weigh them down in some way (just place something heavy on top of the pencils/resin).

The resin hardened.

Cut off the top and place a block for threading it on the lathe!

Because the pencils shifted in the pot (unfortunately), it was to unbalanced to treat on the lathe.

This can be fixed by trimming off some of the sides.

Now the bowl can be made! smoothing and evening out everything.

a few pictures of that proces:

The outside is almost done, it just needs a bit of resin.

Admiring the work:

Hollowing out the bowl, which takes a long time.

a few mistakes where made when measuring where to stop! This will be fixed later on with a nice trick.

Result after sanding. Which is done with 80, 100, 150, and lastly 240 grit sandpaper

To fix the mistake, the bottom can be filled up with a bit of resin and nail polish. No mistakes here!

Another admiring shot of the final product!
