Flight of the Conchords - one of the best TV comedies many have never seen

in #comedy7 years ago

This show had been out for quite some time before a Kiwi friend of mine introduced me to it. Again, it might be because i live in SE Asia that I had never heard of it but it is my understanding that, despite the fact it was produced by HBO, many people have never seen it or even heard of it.

Maybe that person is you... and you should do something about that.

The story is about Jermaine and Brett, two farmers from New Zealand who move to New York City to try their luck at making it big in the music industry, and the extreme difficulties that such a venture entails.

Jermaine and Brett are actually just playing fictionalized versions of themselves as they actually did struggle to make it in the entertainment world.

There are several other recurring characters in the show but most people's favorite is Murray Hewitt. Murray plays the Flight of the Conchords agent / manager and also happens to work a very unfulfilling job at the New Zealand Embassy. In one episode Murray quits his job to be a full-time manager of the band only to fail after 3 weeks or so. Tail between his legs he plans to go back to his office and beg for his job back at the Embassy... only to discover that nobody noticed he hadn't been there and there was only one missed call.

Murray tries his best but all of the gigs he books fall flat for one reason or another in a very comedic fashion.

Every episode features at least one musical number that in most occasions is great for a laugh such as when Jermaine hallucinates that he is married to some girl he met at a party.

Then he actually scores a date or two with her but she doesn't want to be with him and this tragically funny song happens

The thing is, these two are actually quite a successful comedy act that just happen to be very good musicians who referred to themselves as "New Zealand's fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo."

Despite the fact that I constantly am looking for new comedy, I had never seen any of their comedy gigs either. I guess I live in a bubble.

I hope you enjoy them. I know I am glad I discovered this show.

Lol these two guys really very funny, especially in the last video they said a word children, i review it again and again, that's make me laughing, well both are very funny

FOC was freaking Halarious and probably one of the most underatted comedies I’ve seen in ages along with angry boys! There is some real comedic talent in New Zealand and Australia and I don’t think they get a fair shake in the industy!

never heard of Angry Boys. I am gonna write that down and check it out later. Thanks for the tip! @chekohler

There is just something I love about comedy duo's. It's not always twice the comedy but rather better comedy when the two personalities compliment one another in a supremely unique way..Like these two. I've seen similar stuff in short skits mostly on Saturday Night Live. This is funny funny funny. Their music isn't that bad either. Really isn't. I am going to Netflix or Hulu this to see where it goes.

There was a brief comedy series a while back called The Trip. BBC TV series about two guys traveling the country (and other countries) deciding to be food critics. Terrible at it, but the improve convo's are awesome. Better when I've been drinking (cheesy smile). I think there were only three seasons and they may have made a movie out of this (I did not see it). Six episodes or so. An easy run through if you even remotely like the first few scenes. Anyhow a bit dry but worth a "check it out".

and to get further away from your chosen musical comedy but sticking with funny duo's......and If your really into strange comedy stuff... I recommend "The Mighty Boosh"

Did I mention that I am deeply jealous of these multi talented types? I hate when people can be funny and don't even try..PLUS they are musically talented!! This is just C.R.A.P. ... I meant Creative Reliable Artistic Pleasure. hehehe IDK i just made that up. Just guessing, but Good Stuff is probably fine too. I'll have to get back to you one this once I've had a chance to watch a bit of it.

Weird.. I think I like British comedy..Hmmmmmm. What's up with that?. lol.

You should try, everybody hates Chris or Big Bang Theory you will laugh at everything , I assure you, you gonna love it

not a fan of Big Bang Theory past the first 3 seasons as i think they have already done every imagineable scenario of dorky smart dudes having trouble interacting with the "normal" world. I think i watched a few of Everybody hates Chris. That one is better. Thanks for reading and thanks for the suggestions.

The story line is superb and shows what it takes to survive and how it takes to live in New York. I will definitely go watch the whole of it.

Thanks for the review and sharing the story, I feel like I have watched the show

I am one of those you introduced with your first statement of this post. I'm hearing about them for the first time.

With everything you have said about the show, no doubt about it been so interesting. Lol

This part caught my attention :

In one episode Murray quits his job to be a full-time manager of the band only to fail after 3 weeks or so. Tail between his legs he plans to go back to his office and beg for his job back at the Embassy... only to discover that nobody noticed he hadn't been there and there was only one missed call.

His presence and absence makes no difference, it seems the one missed call was even a mistake.... Smiling

Thanks for sharing this, reading about the show alone is funny, not to talk about watching the show, what a beautiful way to start a new day..... Lol

I was impressed, I finished reading it, I like @gooddream

It's my first time coming across such movie series. If , however, it's as interesting and humorous as described in your article, then I'm on my way searching for a new favourite -FOC.A comedy about a musical immigrant in the USA trying to make it big - now that's something I will definitely watch

I love musical songs and to top it, it's a comedy too, i must watch this one, i wonder how come i hvnt heard about it though, maybe perhaps is also because am in West Africa with less exposure to these kinda things? Who knows anyway thanks for the introduction.
