@dollarsandsense,

Hey mate.

I'm glad your Dad bribed the Customs Guy. Naked Corruption is part of the ambiance and quickly gets you into the rhythm of "being on vacation" in a Developing Country. It helps you calibrate your expectations.

One disaster after another. I've been there, done that. I feel bad for your Dad, though. He was trying to do the Good Dad thing and "palpable memories" was what he was buying on the cheap. :-) But this was not what he had in mind. Undoubtedly scarred for life.

You look for the Silver Lining though, right? You bloody well know about that rip-tide trick now ... don't you? :-)

Congrats on the Curie.

Thank you sir! Yeah, to this day I won’t go out in the ocean past my waist.

For anyone wondering what the trick to dealing with a riptide is, here is my guide:

STEP 1: Don’t ever go in the ocean

It’s really that’s simple I’ve found!

I watched a documentary that this merchant marine made about his time on a cargo ship and he said when you go through he Suez Canal, bribes are essentially mandatory. If you don’t pay off the officials they won’t let you pass, so the cost is actually just factored into the overall freight cost now by the company in advance. Crazy

One of the busiest sealanes on the planet. It makes you wonder how anything works at all.
