Universe Gun (original comic) Inks

in #comics7 years ago

I love inking. I’ve always enjoyed the process of cementing pencil indelibly into the paper with stark black lines. I love the contrast, I love the act of it, like a moving meditation of hand and eye. And these days I really enjoy working with ink washes, an ongoing process of mixing the ink and water and laying it down, the ink appearing darker when wet to the point that I’m usually convinced I’ve ruined it all; until the ink dries and it looks better than I could have planned.Moving on from the last post in which I talked about my pencil process, I tried something new (for me) here, which is digitally enhancing my pencils so they look like inked lines. By playing around in Photoshop this is a fairly easy process, which serves two purposes. One, I didn’t have to go over the same lines again. As much as I enjoy it, there is always a point where things need to be wrapped up. Two, I was able to take these digitally darkened pencil lines and print them onto thick paper, allowing me to keep the original pencils untouched. As someone who is almost always convinced they are just about to completely ruin what they’ve done, this is a great reassurance!Overall I’m pretty happy with how it came out. I still need to gain more confidence in spotting large areas of black and going darker in general. Perhaps a task for the next project.Next blog, my old foe, colour.

You are very talented. I like the bone lady at the bottom side most. Definitely a good result at all.

Thanks! I'm not sure if its talent. I prefer to think its years and years of dedicated practice :)

Yes of course. But it reads better when I say "You are very talented." as "you are very practiced" :)

I don't know- talent implies something that comes naturally and without effort, while practice implies consistent dedication. I know which I prefer!

Maybe it is a language problem. I am not a native english speaker. :-)
I just want to express my appreciation and I think the pictures are really good.

I love inking too. The brush is my favourite tool.

I love the brush too, but I acknowledge there's a different tool for every occasion- for me, there are some things the pen can do that the brush simply isn't built for. Its good to be conversant with a range of tools, digital included

I use many tools too, and my comic is all digital except for a few sketches. But for analogue inking I only use brush, never tried with a pen actually. But I know it is very common in manga.

@dcfisher, just discovered your page from a restreem. these look amazing, the different shading really makes the figures come alive and captures the lighting well. look forward to more posts!

Thanks for that, the ink washes add a nice finish to pretty much anything!

Your comics are amazing buddy!

I love your shading technique and style, very good work!
