My Great Grandmother Me?

in #community6 months ago
Yay For Friday Eve !
Last night I was looking for info on some of my family, just a generation up or two. I'm not sure quite what started it, but I sure did get lost in it for a while. I have a dresser that belonged to one of my Aunts and in doing some history searches, I came across this photo of one of my Great-Grandmothers. She was my Dad's Grandmother on his father's side.
I do remember her when I was growing up, although I wasn't around her a lot. It seemed then that she was much older than this photo, but you know how that is, when you are very young, many people look ancient, that are not really.
Hattie, nick name for Harriet, lived till she was 102 and she was clear and mostly independent until the last couple of years of her life.
The thing is, to me, I believe I may have her eyes, face structure and more, however, I would have never noticed or thought that as a child. Maybe I'm seeing more than what is there, but I'm thinking if I got me some round glasses, I may look a lot like her if I am lucky enough to get older. I don't know if I am correct or not, She does have that happy mischief in her eyes. My lips don't look just like that, but they may in a few years. She was born in 1873 and passed in 1975.
I believe this may have been taken somewhere in the middle 1940s, but I could be very wrong about that. There were several other small photos on the same page that had dates of 1943 and 1945/1946. This is classic for being elderly in the 40s don't you think? Lace neckline with a sweater and broach.

Ok... that's all for show and tell for today. The weekend is starting soon and that is making ME have happy eyes !
Love you !

Wow 1873 she would have seen so many things change in her life. 102 is a good innings for sure.
She looks like a proper Victorian lady. Nice post Jacey. 👍🏼

Thank you !

I thought about that myself. Here I am, born in 57 and I thought I had lived in a time of vast change, but good gracious !.... the changes she lived through make mine look small.

Thanks for stopping over. :)

Yep she would have seen it all. Cars, air travel the telegraph and telephone just to name a few.
Mind boggling for sure.
We had the space race and computers I suppose which are basically innovations on existing technology that your great grandmother would have seen being invented...astonishing.

That mischief goes all the way to her smile. I hope you got that!

I bet she was a real catbird ! I wish I had gotten to know the REAL woman that she was instead of just as Great Grandma. Alas, she passed the year I graduated high school and you don't know as a child and teen, that one day you might wish you knew some of your kin folks better.

Oh that's a common regret! We all never get to know those close to us as who they are because of the roles we are in. Whether it's parent child grandparent etc.

I always laugh at the idealised image my kids have of me and I'm like, that's not at all accurate!

I was really close to my Mom's Mom through the years and really got to know the real person, not just as my Granny. I often wished I had gotten to know my Dad's Mom better. I began to try to spend more time with her when I was around 20ish, but then my personal world went a little wonky and I didn't stick with it during that time and then.... it was too late.

I guess when families lived more together back in the day, you got to know some of your closer kin better. Although I can't really imagine that now, it seems it had some good points.

There were no doubt good points. It just seems as if you have all the time in the world to do so and then you dont.

Fucking life eh!

For sure ! There's always tomorrow.... until there's not.

It is sad how quickly and easily family history is lost. Your great granny has such a lovely warm face. And definitely a twinkle in her eyes. We need the side by side of you two to compare! ❤️

It really is sad. Somehow, it seems the questions don't come up until the last person that really would know a lot of the answers is gone !

I would so love to know their stories. There may be some info in some branch of the tree. I saw one thing on a family tree website where the children of a different great aunt had added some info as late as 2014 and 2018. Not all of them were local, so I was unfamiliar with the name. I definitely will be trying to research more to see if I can find any more family tidbits. It's all so interesting.

I like her! She looks very happy!

She does !

She must have been a super woman. She had 8 children .... and her husband, my Great Grandfather, died at age 37 in a construction accident and she never remarried.

OMG ! ...right? :)
