Steem Alliance Working Group Voting Underway -- Some Thoughts

in #community6 years ago (edited)

Sometimes life takes unexpected turns, even here on Steem. About a week ago a post came out from something called @steemalliance announcing the community would form a Foundation and calling for nominations for a future board. I was one of those nominated, then I nominated a few others. Other people nominated others and before long I heard there was around 200 nominees.

Not long after I was invited to join a discord for this Steem Alliance. That has started an unexpected journey that will continue for some time yet. An ad-hoc group was formed and given the task of organizing an election for another working group which will be tasked with receiving proposals for this future foundation, organizing them into a community vote to select the future structure.

This working group and the next one are all volunteers who will give of their time and talents to make the next step happen. There is zero payment and they will have zero authority other than to do their tasks. Once their work is done, they will go away and the next level takes over.

I have been part of the first group. I’ve also been nominated and am standing for the next working group. That election is currently underway. The voting will continue until 2am EST / 7am UTC in the Steem Alliance discord. For more information on how to vote, visit this post.

If you are really unsure what is going on, read the posts in the #steemalliance tag.

For those who are reading this and are unsure just what I bring to the table, this the writeup I’ve placed in the channel for the WG Candidates:

Hi, I’m @shadowspub and a candidate for the Working Group election currently underway. I was part of the ad-hoc group as well. It was an interesting experience putting together this election. Offline I have over 40 years experience in leadership and committee roles in non-profit and community organizations. My formal education is in Robotics but my real interest is writing which is what brought me to Steem in August 2016. Since then I’ve been part of several communities, support several projects and lead The Ramble (formerly Steemit Ramble) where @ramblingradio currently has several shows each week including Pimp Your Post Thursday which was ran for over a year and a monthly Witness Chat which invites all witnesses to take part in a community discussion. I’m very interested in both seeing and helping move this process forward. Like Steem, we’re breaking new ground here!

My Thoughts About the Project

It is always an interesting challenge to create a group or organization where one never existed. I’ve been involved in doing this offline more than once. While there are some similarities, there are some big differences too.

Offline when creating a community organization there is a central authority and laws at various levels which need to be paid attention to. Here on Steem, the challenge is to create an organization which is as decentralized as possible, being as transparent as possible and being as fair as possible for the widest part of the community possible.

I made a comment earlier this week that herding cats has started to look easier. I partially jest but it is an interesting challenge to be part of. Each step of the way this past week we’ve had to do our assigned task of organizing an election and at the same time being careful not to constrain what the next group could or could not do once they are formed and move on to the next stage. Offline, the exact opposite comes into play, the actions of the first group can and often should constrain the next group in a centralized structure.

We had to come up with a fair and open way to have nominations and voting. This was new ground for us. The next stage will also be new ground and in some instances we’ll be learning as we go through a process of discussion and receiving input from members of the community, even those not on the working group. The first group took into account as much of the input as we were able to.

Supporting Spunkee Monkee

this post I wroteOne of the projects I support and am really enthusiastic to see happen is @dreemsteem’s Spunkee Monkee project. It’s a way to bring families to the platform and get kids away from their screens doing defined activities which will earn them points when they return to their screens. Those point let them dig for treasure. To learn more about the program, you can check out or visit @spunkeemonkee.

@theycallmedan has put a 10k SP delegation up for grabs by a community group. He put out nominations for the groups and now has a poll running to determine which group is going to get the support. I would really love to see you sign in and put some love on the Spunkee Monkee project:

Which Steem Project Should I Delegate 10k SteemPower To For 1 Year?

At the end of the day... it really is all about community.

It was a pleasure serving alongside, this week

I have ALL the confidence in the world, you will be amazing going forward.

It’s such a great initiative. We make the mistake sometimes, I think, that decentralized means unstructured or without leadership. Maintaining this platform and positioning for long-term growth takes leadership. We need this. There are too many problems not being addressed. I will vote today.

Thank you for your unending support of Spunkee Monkee!!!

And thank you for your willingness to step into the fray for the benefit of everyone on the platform!

We appreciate that there are people like you who rise to the occasion, despite the long road ahead.

Happy to vote for you!!!

Thank you! I havew been teyi g to figure this out. Now to figure out how to register on gina!
