As a steemian who just got started on steemit, you shouldn't be expecting to earn as much as someone who has been on the platform for a longer time.
You will earn, your reputation will increase, but is needs patience and consistency
The more committed you are in the platform, the more you earn.
The more you give useful comments on good posts, the more you earn too.

Like you rightly said consistency and humility are the watchwords. Though it can be a little frustrating and annoying at times when one tries so hard but gets a very low rate of return; all we need do is to have a goal in mind and keep pressing towards it.
