Today I bring 10 data that show an interesting comparison between the world of a few years or decades, and that are incontrovertible evidence of changes that you might have already imagined. Meet them below:
10 Weight
The average weight of a person today is 14 kilograms higher than in the 1960s.
9 Work and study
Between 70 and 80% of university students today have a part-time or full-time job. That's twice as many as students who worked 30 years ago.
8 Television
In the United States, the number of people watching regular television dropped by 27% between 2011 and 2017.
7 Drug use
Drug use among young people has been declining consistently over the past 20 years. In the United States, the percentage of youths and adolescents who admitted to having used illegal drugs increased from 34 percent in 1997 to 27 percent today.
6 Teen Pregnancy
Teenage pregnancy has halved since the 1950s.
5 Tobacco use
Tobacco use also declined significantly over the past 50 years. In the United States, the percentage of people who smoked a packet per day was 35 percent in 1957, and 20 percent in 2017.
4 Marriage
In 1968, 56% of Americans aged 18-31 were married. In 2014 the percentage dropped to 23%.
3 IQ
In 1910, the average IQ would be 70, according to current measurements. Now, the average is between 130 and 150, depending on the measurement. According to the expert James Flynn, as a species we evolve in the understanding of categories, hypothetical systems, nonverbal language and visual images that portray alternative realities.
2 Fish in the sea
Since 1950, 90% of the largest fish in the ocean have disappeared. The cause is industrial fishing.
1 Old people
Today the population over 65 is ten times greater than it was a century ago.
