Last year we made a trip to The Netherlands and also visited Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. It is a wonderful city and as always when we come in an famous place we take the opportunity to visit an old church, a cathedral or a castle. A famous cathedral in Stockholm is the Storkyrkan which is located in Gamla Stan, the Old City. It is a beautiful cathedral that is well-known for the sculpture of St.George and the dragon. It was carved out of one big piece of oak by Berndt Notke of Lübeck. The consecration was in the year 1489 as an altar for the shrine of St. George.
The stories goes that a dragon demanded human offerings from the people of the town of Selene in Lybia. One day Cleodolinda the daughter of the king was to be sacrified but St. George promised the king to slay the dragon under the condition that all citizens of the city would convert themselves to christianity and be baptized. And that is what happened. Sint George killed the dragon and Selene prospered as a christian city.

Wow the shrine with the sculptures is awesome.
The story is also quite nice.
Did you zoom in around the dragon's head by any chance? Would be nice to see more details
Thanks for sharing!
Wonderful photographs @eagleye. Amazing to think that this sculpture was created from a single piece of wood. 🦋
The detail on that sculpture is amazing and beautiful. Don't know if I will ever make it over there, but I love to see photos. And yes, Compumatrix is awesome!!!!
