Last week, I talked about building confidence systematically. Basically, with any new ability or skill there's a way for you to achieve it as long as you are willing to put in the effort.
Since then, a lot of you have brought up a good point - that there still seems to be a gap.
Why does confidence come so easily to some but not others? Why does it seem like you have to work that much harder to build up the same confidence as someone else?
To answer that question we can go deeper. The key is self-esteem.
Sounds like the same thing. What's the difference?
Confidence is how you feel about your ability to deal with different situations, and is accumulated from experiences and skills.
Self-esteem, on the other hand, is your overall feeling of self-worth. It's basically a measure of how much you value yourself.
Self-esteem is your base, and is the driving force behind your self-confidence.
Many people suffer from a low sense of self-worth. Often it's hidden under the surface and we're not consciously aware of it. But it's the reason why we find it hard to let go of things, and why we find it hard to say "no" to someone - even if it's for the best.
Having a sense of self worth doesn't mean you are prideful or arrogant. It means acknowledging your potential for creating a meaningful contribution for yourself and others in this world. Everyone has their own inner strengths and advantages. Self-esteem means believing in your strengths and deciding to invest in them.
From this perspective, how much do you value yourself? What's the level of your self-esteem?
If it's something important to you, here's a great article by Tracy Kennedy who walks you through how to understand and build up your self-esteem.
If this was helpful, I would love to hear your feedback. Any suggestions, comments, requests, or even sharing how these effect your everyday experiences are most welcome.
