There is so much classified stuff out there. Weapons programs, space programs etc.. and whether these are legal or illegal ops we as the public aren't informed and in the case illegal ones can never find out because our institutions and politicians can't even get their hands on the data. It makes a mockery of what democracy is supposed to be.
