The main problem is that most old documents are either doctored with or the dating methods are VERY questionable. Fomenko gives great insights into the dating issue, even carbon dating is very inaccurate and has a huge margin of error. Most "ancient" texts are actually copies from the 16th century...
The Janissary are fascinating, but also the Mamelukes. They have been slaughtered not so long ago and the crap they write about them on wikipedia is very telling. If someone is defamed and besmeared on wikipedia, usually the opposite is true...
