I would say that USA did its own damage, but known only to the tens of thousands of families of children born deformed from enriched uranium weaponry, devastating war deaths and dismemberments, homelessness traumas, etc., and that WL amplified that damage by exposing it beyond the realms of the victims.
Once upon a time, factual reporting on the true results of violent devastation of war was a full time preoccupation and professional responsibility of journalists in countries with free presses.
For example, during the Vietnam war, every evening on CBS news, Walter Cronkite and Roger Mudd told the populace how many people (military mostly) died that day, complete with footage of soldiers, helicopters, jungles, what have you.
i.e.,
It was really after Henry Kissinger went to China with Richard Nixon that the American news started to get sanitized: they were not shown and were barely told about the US involvements with conflicts in Northern Ireland, genocidal madness in Cambodia, meddling in Iran, etc. Part of the rising of punk rock was like todays memes, to inform the public where the MSM was paid to remain silent (aka institutionalized censorship).
Now, of course, what was once a professional duty of journalists and a constitutional right of voters to know what the government was doing with tax payer funds abroad has been made CRIMINAL, and Chelsea Manning was tortured ruthlessly for the fateful decision to make Americans aware of what was once a daily civic obligation to stay informed of current events!
The loss of the reputation therefore is really of the sanitized fantasy land that Americans have of their own country's external affairs; people abroad have known all about it. But they too can remain polite and quiet so long as the "aid" (hush money) keeps flowing in the diplomatic peers and governing classes abroad!
