Well, up against an elk, an eagle and some other stiff competition, here is the humble Hoverfly. Quite harmless, they mimic wasps as a form of protective camouflage. They are very common in gardens i n spring as they hover over plants in flower. Yellow seems to be their favourite colour, probably because a lot of wattles are yellow when in flower.
Their larvae hunt the eggs, larvae and adults of other insects like aphids, so they are a welcome sight in the garden, particularly in one like mine where I use no chemicals at all. Pesticides are not welcome in my house.
I caught these shots this morning at Lake Burley Griffin, just across the way from the American Embassy and Parliament House.
It was a warm morning, about 34C (94ish Fahrenheit) when these were taken.
