Steem Basic Income Giveaway (Emoji....)

in #contest5 years ago (edited)

Thanks for all the replies to the Cooking theme from last week... it appears that we are pretty evenly split on those who are completely messy and those who are nice (hehe...).

Anyway, this week I was listening to an interesting podcast that had a theme of Emojis and how they get approved and standardised across the different platforms and everything... it's pretty cool in a nerdy sort of way, mainly because they have to have a central set of standards otherwise messages just turn to garbage as it won't be recognised by the receiver.

Anyway, it did start to bring up the idea of what constitutes an emoji... could it just be anything?

My Question

  1. How do you feel about Emoji in general?

  2. Should there be a limit to Emojis or should we just include everything that can be rendered in pixel picture form?

My sample answer

Unsplash

I'm a real late comer to the Emoji game... I think my daughter (who is now seven) started to introduce me to them in the last few years... even so, I've used them pretty sparingly. I am a huge fan of the Google Hangouts stickers though! Those are pretty cool...

Anyway, I think emoji are pretty useful as ways to convey nuance in meaning. Text by itself can be open to multiple interpretations of nuance and tone... that can rely too heavily on the projection of the reader's intent onto the author. So, they serve a good use for that... or as a short hand for a reaction to a particular idea.

So, in this vein... that is how I view Emojis.... thus for me, it makes really little sense to have animals/chairs/beanbags... and a whole slew of pictures, which just makes finding the right one difficult! Maybe this is a sign of my loosening grasp of the cutting edge of technology? For me, the little round yellow guys are all that are required... the rest are just complications and confusions!

Rules

  1. Upvote is not required, but appreciated!
  2. Resteem is NOT necessary!
  3. In the comments, answer as best as you can the questions that are posed in the "My Questions"!
  4. I have added a small Steem-Bounty to the post, so that everyone who replies with a valid entry will get something back. If I give your post a small upvote, it is valid (also, subscribe to @dustsweeper for maximum benefit!).
  5. I will be sponsoring as many people as this post pays out in liquid SBD/STEEM. Also I will kick in at least the required amount to round up to the full number. Winner is by random generator after a shortlisting of quality comments!
  6. PLEASE PLEASE Don’t upvote your OWN comment. I can’t stop you doing it, but it seems to mess up the distribution of the Bounty for everyone else. If you upvote your own comment, I will consider it an invalid entry when doing the draw.

Steem Basic Income

One of the first communities that I came in contact with at the beginning of my time at Steemit was @steembasicincome. As a author starting out on your fresh new Steemit account, Steemit can be a daunting and lonely place to be. OFten, it can feel like you are posting into an abyss with no one listening and with no ability to grow out of the situation. A share of Steem Basic Income gives you a guaranteed vote on one post a day, thus giving you a small but over time cumulative support to your account to help grow you out of your initial wilderness!

With this post, I want to help sponsor people who might not even have the spare 1 STEEM that is required for registration. So, when this post pays out, I will sponsor people depending on the payout of this post. Basically, I will round up the SBD payout from this post and then that will be the number of people I will sponsor. (So, if the payout is 2.3 SBD, I will sponsor 3 people). OF course, this is not simply an altruistic move, as the sponsor of a Steem Basic Income share also gets a share, so it is a great way to help others whilst helping yourself!

Last week's winners

The last post paid out 0.449 SBD and 0 STEEM in liquid earnings. So, that would make 2 shares.

The winners by random draw are:

I think society really "jumped the shark" when The Emoji Movie was released. This is why aliens won't talk to us!!!

Haha... My daughter really wanted a set of emoji shoes after that...

I love emoji. It's like you say: it can give written text an obvious nuance which makes sure something does't come across the wrong way. Just add a 😉, or a 😛 and people know not to take what you say too serious.
It's a shame I always have to go and look up the codes when i'musing my laptop. It's so much easier to implement them when using your phone.

I use the non-smiley ones mostly to make something stand out, like the 🌺 for the garden challenge, the 💡 to mark something important or a 🏆 in a contest title.

It shouldn't be overdone, though. I've seen posts with so any emojis in it that I did not have a single idea what the post was about, lol.

I think you never have enough emojis... Often I'm looking for one, and then it appears it simply does not exist...

However, it needs to be obvious for everyone where an emoji stands for. I use the upside down smiley pretty often on Discord. Not so long ago, one of my fellow @teampossible members asked about the meaning of the smiley. It appeared everyone had his own interpretation, and on top of that, it was hard to explain what I meant by using it.

I think you do bring up an important point. Once you get off the really obvious ones and the literal ones... then it can be quite subjective as to what they mean... and from that point, they really lose their usefulness. After all, a language is only as good as long as the two communicating parties agree on the meaning... Plus, then you have the problem of the "literal" emoji sometimes having extra meanings...

For me, it is an illustration that reinforces the message.
I only like those of joy and encouragement. 😁
Sad faces are pessimistic, they use them for bad reviews that I do not like.

This is how I like to use them as well.. to reinforce the meaning of the words... or to clarify the intent!

I use a lot of them. Don't know when I started using them but I do so often. My only problem with them is when I chat with someone who only uses them. When I make the time to type, 'how are you?', then you just respond with 👍, makes me start hating emojis.

Posted using Partiko Android

ha... yes, it can get quite irritating to only have emoji as replies... however, sometimes it can be just because the other person is busy!

Maybe true, but I'm not sure they would love that if they were on the other end

I don't know, they can be useful for making clear the tone of a text... otherwise it can be hard to find nuance!

however, i will upvote my comment due to silly point , this donkey @cheetah is downvotin all of my posts and comments so to overcome the ngative value deducted from my reputation, i upvote my comments - silly ha,,!!

I have upvoted this post and resteemed it too

good work my friend

thank you

Emoji are very useful for conveying when you are joking or serious... that can be extremely difficult to do in a text only message! Especially if you don't know the author very well....

Thanks for the win @bengy. I appreciate it. 😁

I use emojis a bit, usually to add expression to what I've written but also for a bit of phone for birthdays etc.

My pleasure!

I love the stickers for the birthdays and all of that... but the more mundane emoji are starting to get to be a bit too much!

Honestly my friend I blame emojis as much as twitter and test message for ruining peoples ability to speak clearly to one another. I find them amusing and they can help at times.
I just think there has to be a line but I know like most thing it will keep growing and dumbing folks down. Just my view my friend. Thanks for sharing!!!

Ha... yes, emojis when overused are a drain on language... or an evolution? Anyway, I do find them useful if used as an enhancer or a something to convey nuance. By themselves, they are a bit meaningless, but they can add flavour or at least set the tone of the text.

I think the old version of emojis(like :) :| :( :D :P ………)are more then enough for adding expressions to your text.

Also I don't really like emojis because on most mobile device the capacity of symbols is limited and therefor emojis often replace useful (math) symbols(like ¹ ² ³ ) I cannot write anymore.

And in general I think most of them are completely useless. Some people tend to place the emoji resembling a word behind the word(like "…cherrycherry emoji…").

Also I think as useful as they may be they can also lead to some confusion at the other end because most emoji look the same on first sight.
Also a problem is if the sender uses a wrong emoji or something.

So I would say they are no advantage.

Haha... a dedicated old fashioned emoji lover! I love it! In many ways I'm the same... the old ones were enough, after all, how much fine nuance do we really need... and how many do we have before there is a fundamental lack of how the are perceived between author and reader.

I'm not really a huge fan, I very really use them. However, the concept of a pictographic language is something I have encountered in numerous novels, and it sounds pretty awesome. I don't know if emojis will be the path to that, but perhaps eventually there will be something similar that we use. For me, it's just easier to write out what I'm saying. Using emojis would make it take longer. I agree though that the capacity to include nuance is definitely worth while.

Posted using Partiko Android

Oh man... real pictographic languages would be a nightmare I think! There is already enough confusion without adding in the subtle nuance of what a reader/author perceives in a subjective picture! Anyway, I do still find that the emoji are useful when used in conjunction with words, they set the tone of the sentence... but alone... well, that is pretty confusing at times...

Sometime I think that emoji user is a person who can't spread their word. They need help then they choose emoji.
But then i kno that the emoji make their post is stronger. They not just want to say or write something, they want to send something from the heart. So they will use emoji well and a lot.
However i am a bad emoji user. So i rarely use it.
I just write then up to the reader to understand my mind.

Yes... I find that words are much better to express my thoughts... however, there are times that I would prefer to add an extra emoji to clarify the actual tone of my words. After all, there are many ideas that can be taken in many different ways...

I don't think to use emojis. It is probably because I don't do a lot of texting. I'm not great at typing and trying to use that tiny keyboard is just too much. Some people make fun of my texts because I write in full sentences and follow the rules of grammar.

Also because I don't text often people don't text me. Frequently, they will call me to tell me they sent me a text. I get them to tell me what it was about and respond verbally. So, I don't see many emojis.

I know that emojis have expanded from variations of the smiley face to other items. I think if they make sense it is okay to use. I know my sister the chef will often use the food emojis.

I hadn't thought of the specialised use of food emoji! I guess that makes sense... I never really use those ones... as I would rather write the word... it takes me far longer to find the picture in the emoji picker!

I like using emoji's! They add some much needed colour sometimes. I usually only stick to the happy faces so I don't really need a huge variety, but they can definitely be fun. I'm surprised more people don't use them in comments... maybe they don't know that they can? Steemit needs a smiley tool!

I only use them when I am at a phone... when there is an emoji picker... On the keyboard, I find that it is more of a pain to find them, so I just don't!

However, I'm more like you... I only tend to use the simple ones...

I like Emojis, probably just as much as I like Gif's. At work that employee chat room is one to be admired as the greatest minds battle for the perfect gif to send. With that in mind, there was that one news article of someone sending emojis in a cold call email. Terrible idea? That was the question. I don't think it's appropriate in the workplace with expectations of course. Even then, our culture today is running towards breaking barriers and maybe communicating via gif's and emoji's will be the norm.

I know that some people really LOVE gifs... I don't really use them much at all! I don't have a normal workplace... so I didn't realise that people use them in a work chatroom!

I have been using emoji's since they were available on yahoo-chat many years ago, I find them useful to convey certain emotions during text, like anger or my favourite is suspicious, but even all those years ago they started to release hundreds of emoji's and frankly I found it made things more confusing and unnecessary, I think we should keep them to a useful minimum.

This is what I think as well... the basic (original) ones were useful for conveying nuance and emotion... the rest, well... start to get confusing as the two communicating parties might well have different ideas on what they mean!

I use all that: emojis, emoticons, stickers, gifs. I think is a great way to convey other ideas. Text is very useful but sometimes you need something else ;)

Agreed... although, there are starting to be way too many of them!

Today Emoji was already a part of our everyday activities in the internet most especially in social media. Indeed it became part of our daily virtual language. True enough that there are words in our minds that we cannot we express "verbatim" and cannot easily uttered even in written words. To convey those unspoken emotions through personalized imagery and character symbols can always give us a sense of easiness to show what is really in our thoughts and feelings. For me, I am convinced that we should use anything (symbols, imagery, characters and the like) that can able to rendered and expresses the feelings we have inside. Thanks for the opportunity to answer and participate :) ; )

Definitely, there are great uses for emoji... however, I start to wonder if we have waaay to many of them now, and they start to lose their common meaning, leading to confusion between the reader and the author!

@bengy in your case I think the best way to not become so confuse with so many existing emoji or emoticons is to just be selective and choose only those emoji that relates your feelings and thoughts you want to express. Yeah you are right hundreds of new developed emoji are bit annoying. I too sometimes can't get exactly what does or what particular emotion they are expressing :) cheers.

I love emoji. Thank god they came in existence and made life easy - Now I can easily show my weird facemaking to my boyfriend on chat which is not possible without emoji.
Most of the time emotions cannot be expressed through words in a conversation and emoji works great there.

Yes, the emotion emoji are great for that... but all the rest that are starting to get added are starting to get to be a bit too much for me!

Hmm agreed here. My boyfriend forwarded me some vulgar emoji last night that his friends sent him - oh boey I was so irritated for almost 10 minutes.
