Furred Animals!
Welcome to the official start of the Deranged Photography Contests. For the first theme in the contest I chose to go with something simple, but had some special meaning to me.
Over the past few weeks, I have been releasing posts detailing my Safari Adventures. It was a 3 part series and I concluded it on Monday, so to celebrate I want to see all of your great pictures of furred animals.
Your photographs do not have to be of exotic animals, they can be of your dog or cat. As long as the animal has fur, it qualifies.
Please read the entire post for a full understanding of the rules and how the contest is set up. This photography contest is different than what you may be used to.
Photo taken by me @derangedvisions
How is the Deranged Photography Contest set up?
The contest will be broken up into three different tiers. Each will have a different payout for the winners based on what tier you enter into. Here is a breakdown of the winning based on the tiers:
Place | Professional | Amateur | Beginner |
---|---|---|---|
1st | 1.25 SBD | 1 SBD | 0.5 SBD |
2nd | 0.75 SBD | 0.5 SBD | 0.25 SBD |
3rd | 0.5 SBD | 0.25 SBD | 0.15 SBD |
After the first month, I am hoping to set up a pool to award the top photographer in each category with a larger amount of SBD, where the number each 1st place winners will compete for the top photographer of the month for each tier.
Each contest will be open for submissions for 5 days after the post is made and then closes at 0100 UTC (1800 MST) on the 5th day.
This will give me and any guest judges time to judge the submissions and create the post announcing the winners.
How to enter
When you enter a photo in the competition, you will state what tier you want to be judged in and locked in for the month at that level.
For example if you enter a photo, you drop the photo in the comment section, state what level of photographer you are, and then give a description of the photograph.
If you want to make your own post and reference the contest in your post, that would be awesome, just remember to post your picture in the comment section along with your post link. Who knows, you may get a visit and an upvote on your post as well as an upvote on the picture. Use the tag #derangedphotography to make it easy to find your posts.
Additional Notes
This contest is in its early stages and as time goes it things may need to be tweaked to benefit the group as a whole to make it a more fun experience for everyone.
Contestants can only win 1st or 2nd place once a week.
Only one submission per contest. Extra submissions will be ignored.
If you do not state wish tier you want to be judged in for the month, I will leave a comment to remind you to do so, but if you don't respond, you will be assigned to a tier and locked in for that month.
Plagiarism will not be tolerated in any form. All submissions must be your own work. I will investigate every entry and one of the main sponsors is the @steemcleaners team, so if you are caught plagiarizing, not only will you be blacklisted from competing from any future contests, but you will be reported to Steemcleaners as well. It is not worth it to try and cheat, especially with the 3 tier set up where everyone has an equal shot of winning.
Who are the amazing sponsors?
The first and major sponsor being @czechglobalhosts. For those that don't know, @czechglobalhosts puts on two daily photo contests that are open to anyone to enter. His contests cover the entire globe so that anyone can enter. The days and themes are:
- Australian Monday
- Antarctica and World's Oceans Tuesday
- African Wednesday (My personal favorite)
- European Thursday
- North American Friday
- South American Saturday
- Asian Sunday
On top of the themed daily continent contests, he hosts a daily travel contests specific to the beautiful country of the Czech Republic. So make sure to follow @czechglobalhosts and participate in his contests because he is offering two daily photography contests that you can enter to win.
The other sponsor's I have are @guiltyparties and the @steemcleaners team. @guiltyparties and everyone else behind @steemcleaners does so much for the platform as a whole, trying to reduce the spammers, phishing and plagiarism that goes on here. If you have any free slots for witness votes you should consider casting a vote for @guiltyparties, vote for @patrice, vote for @anyx, vote for @pfunk, and vote for @ arcange. Your votes for these great witnesses go a long way in ensuring the platform continues to thrive.
@spiritualmax is another sponsor of the contest, but he doesn't know it. He delegated 100SP to me two days prior to the announcement of the contest in hopes that I would do good for the Steemit community, and he did not even have any idea that I had been working on releasing these contests. His delegation is much appreciated.
If you would like to become a sponsor and delegate SP to the Deranged Photography Contests you can do so by clicking on the following links:
50 SP, 100SP, 250SP, 500SP, 1000SP,5000SP.
Be sure to leave at least 50SP undelegated on your account. All delegations will go towards rewarding all of the participants of the contests by upvoting the entries. I am hoping to be able to reward everyone for taking part in my contests.
Now get out and start shooting
I hope you are all excited about this new contest. The contest themes will be different than what you are used to seeing on Steemit, and I am doing this to encourage everyone to get out and shoot new pictures. If you are a life long professional nature photographer, some of the themes may push you to try and learn something new. If you are just a beginner photographer, this is a great place to have fun shooting all sorts of exciting styles and learn in the process.
I am looking forward to seeing all of your great submissions. Have fun taking those pictures!!
Happy to see that there are already so many submissions to your contest! I know that you like Africa, so I thought I would use this fact to my advantage by choosing a photo from Africa ;) I haven't been on a safari yet, but I went on a cat safari in the streets of Morocco!
For now, I am basically just a student passionate about photography and earning some money on the side by selling stock photos, so I am not sure if I can really call myself "professional", but I will try ;)
You are very well qualified in my books:)
Thanks Tomas :)
Small cat safari on the streets of Morocco. That sounds like an awesome time. I love the expression! You also get bonus points for using a photo from Africa. Great shot. I agree with Tomas, you are well qualified to compete as pro.
Ha, I knew I could hope for some Africa bonus points :D
Thanks for holding the contest @derangedvisions ! I will try for the Professional category !
This is a shot of a Japanese Macaque or Snow Monkey that was engaging in some serious eye contact with my camera. It was taken at the hot springs (or onsen) that feeds into the valley of the Yokoyu-River at Jigokudani Yaen Koen. Literally meaning "Hell's Valley", Jigokudani was named after the steam and boiling water that bubbles out of small crevices in the frozen ground which is surrounded by steep cliffs. The valley sits at an elevation of 850 meters. Other than humans the Macaque is the primate that lives in the coldest climate and survives in winter temperatures down to -15 °C. In japan the species is known as Nihonzaru. In Shinto belief, mythical beasts known as raijū sometimes appeared as monkeys and kept Raijin, the god of lightning, company. The "three wise monkeys", which warn people to "see no evil, hear no evil, and speak no evil", are carved in relief over the door of the famous Tōshō-gū shrine in Nikkō. Awesome shot! I lived in Japan for 4 years growing up and wasn't lucky enough to see any of these little guys. I lived in Okinawa though where it was a lot warmer than mainland Japan.
Thank you for participating. I am looking forward to seeing more from you in these contests.
It should be furry enough to qualify ! Were you stationed down there with the US military ?
Ya, my father was in the Air Force. I was in elementary school. It was one of my favorite places growing up.
There are many great photos in this contest already but I can see most of the animals here were held in captivity so I am submitting this curious wild fella whom I captured when he came down from a tree in Costa Rican jungle. It is the brown-throated sloth, the iconic animal of Costa Rica.
I have no photography background, nor equipment (I use my mobile phone) so I am applying for the beginner category.
My daughter is in love with sloths!!! She loves this photo. We watched a video of Machu Picchu and there was a boy holding a baby sloth and now she is excited for when we go there because she wants to hold a baby sloth around. Here is a picture of my little sloth buddy named Sid hanging out with your entry.
Aww, this is sweet Wes! I am really happy your daughter liked that photo :) Actually, we fell in love with sloths too in Costa Rica. I think it is impossible not to have affection for these smiling, slowly moving furry bundles of cuteness :)
Cute!
I remember this little guy. ;)
i want to go in the amateur category with a photo of my dog, she is my princess!! it's half wolf, the other half I do not know
Great shot. Thank you for participating. I am looking forward to seeing more of your stuff. You are an awesome photographer.
I am also a huge fan of what you are doing with @youarehope.
Thanks you for that sweet comment <3 thanks for all the support you are giving to @youarehope we are touching people's life out there for good!
I guess there are enough cute cats and dogs, so here are some different furred animals. =) I encountered these curious guys during the epic hike to the Rainbow Mountain in Peru. They were running wild on the breathtaking harsh highland with an elevation of almost 5000 meters (about 16000 feet). I think the hungry one on the left is an alpaca, and the one in the middle is a llama? But I'm not sure about the one in the front. Anyone knows? I will go with Amateur.
For some reason I find this picture hilarious. Bonus points for making me laugh. Great shot Donica.
"Dude, listen, I'm glad I can help you with your fur competition on Steemit or whatever that is, but please could you at least trim it on my face a little bit? I can't even see where is the camera is..."
Beginner
Look he is even smiling. Great shot!
I think I will submit this to the professional category. This is a recent shot of my mother's cat phoebe:
https://steemit.com/derangedphotography/@fiftysixnorth/deranged-photography-contest-entry-furred-animal-theme
This is an amazing cat shot. I can't get mine to pose like this. I have two siamese and they don't ever sit elegantly like this. I really like the colors you have.
Thanks! Actually she is a nightmare to photograph, although she's slowing down in her twilight years, she still doesn't sit still. I took about 50 shots of her and only about 7 were well framed and/or in focus. This was a split second moment where she moved her head just into the right position :) it was back breaking work I tell you! 😂 She does have the best colours, she's like a little tiger :)
This is beautiful! I love it
Thanks :)
Scrolling through all the submissions, this one truly caught my eye. There's so much to explore in this photo, but all leads back to the cat's face and eye. Lovely!
Thanks, I appreciate that. It helps that she's a very photogenic cat ;)
Big cats are still just big cats.

Great entry! Now you are making me miss Africa and want to go back and go on another Safari!
Thanks, that's exactly what we were intending :)
The other option is to follow our Safaris ;)
Momma's Love - amateur
This is my mastiff momma with her litter of pups. Cleo is such an amazing part of our family. We live off grid, and she has so many roles here. She protects, she hunts, but most importantly she LOVES.
I have resteemed this post, and i think this is such a great contest.
Good luck to all the entrants!!
:)
Woohoo! So glad you entered! Yay Cleo! :p
I love Mastiffs! They are such awesome dogs.
I can't imagine my life without them! You have good taste! LOL
Here is my entry. Bowser catching flies. Locking in at the beginners level :)
Such a great shot. Puppies are always so cute. This action shot is so cool.
Thanks DV! Puppies can melt a person's heart :3
Love that picture! He was so tiny! Thank you for pointing out this contest!!
Thank you for stopping by. I am glad you chose to share the pictures of your dogs as well. Here is my friends service dog. She is a Cane Corso, which is an Italian Mastiff.
Beautiful dog indeed! Rare breed as well.
We have quite a few in this area. They had such a bad reputation, it's good to see them. Gorgeous dogs!
Beautiful!! Just beautiful!
beautiful photo!
Of course! A great contest like this is meant to be shared to everyone <3
This is my entry for a photo contest by @derangedvisions with a Furred Animal theme!
This is a Sumatran gibbon seized by the Aceh Natural Resources Conservation Agency from a citizen in Aceh, Indonesia who arrested him as a pet. For a while these primates are placed inside the cage, and later will be released back into the wildlife. These gibbons are legally protected animals, as these primate populations are few and endangered, due to the large number of illegal hunting and illegal logging.
For this contest, I try in the Professional category.
Setting : 1/250 sec | f 5.6 | 90.0 mm | ISO Speed 500
Camera : Canon EOS 60D
Lens : EF-S18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
Photograph : @zikmaulana
Wow, this is great. It looks like he is pondering the meaning of life, or he is just sad to be in his cage. There is so much emotion in this photo. Awesome job.
I'll pick Professional. Already seen some fantastic shots so far. Great turnout!
This nosey little lady is Gaia. She's my parent's beautiful Australian Shepherd/Border Collie Mix. Very intelligent, and also OBSESSED with herding the cats around the house. At least she's also got the chickens to watch when she goes outside. ;)
This is such a cool and unique shot. My dogs do the exact same thing when I try to get down at their level and take a picture of them. I usually end up with a huge nose smudge on my lens. Awesome entry.
hi ... @derangedvisions.. . best regards for photo contest you created. i tried professional category
My post is a photo of the Sumatran tiger. one of the rare and endangered tigers in the world.
The Sumatran tiger (Latin: Panthera tigris sumatrae) is a tiger subspecies whose original habitat on the island of Sumatra is one of six tiger subspecies that survive to date and is included in the critically endangered criterion of endangered species in the Red List of threatened species released by the Institute IUCN World Conservation. The wild population is estimated between 400-500 tails, mainly living in national parks in Sumatra. Recent genetic testing has revealed unique genetic markers, indicating that this subspecies may develop into separate species, when successfully sustained
This is such a great picture! I would love to be up close to a tiger. Thank you for entering the contest. I am looking forward to seeing more of your work. I haven't seen your name in any of @czechglobalhosts contests. You should check out his daily photo contests. You would do amazing in them as well.
Thanks ... @derangedvisions .. I'm a newcomer in steemit. I really appreciate the race you made. I have not been signed in to one of the @czechglobalhosts contests. later i will try to review it.
I hope you do not just assume I'm your contest participant. Hope you will be friends with me. In addition I am currently focusing on ethnophotographic research. One of the areas of photography I specialize in completing my thesis. Hope you will share knowledge about it.
greetings.... nice to know you
Mevi Rosdian, I have you entered in my contest if you want to participate. I have checked out your photography and it is great.
yes .. of course I want to participate. thanks for your attention.
greetings @derangedvisions .. :)

Ok then, I'll give it a shot. No one has uploaded a black and white. So here's my fury little guy.
I think I'll go for professional. Fingers crossed!!!!
Fantastic shot. Those eyes are beautiful. That is one serious expression.
Thanks for holding the contest @derangedvisions ! I will try for the Professional category !

@derangedvisions
Awesome shot. I have never been close to a camel before. One of my dreams is to ride a camel across the Sahara and document the whole trip.
Well you can realize that fantastic dream in the Canary Islands, also with the climb to the volcano Teide, the desert is beautiful in images but it is a real hell. Wes
@derangedvisions
Great contest @derangedvisions ;)
My entry for the Amateur category is this shot of a lynx captured in the Polar Zoo (Norway).
Wow, this is so cool. The lynx is such a cool looking cat with those pointy ears.
I do not agree with the tier you chose! 😆
Not doing this as my main work, I entered the tier that best fit my photography :D
Entering in Professional Tier. Here's my entry:

Although I haven't sold any of my photos yet I'd love to enter in the Professional category.
This is an awesome. Not all furry animals need to be wild and exotic to be cool. I have never taken a picture of a chipmunk even though I have tried. They are FAST. You did a fantastic job.
Thanks @derangedvisions :) They run fast from one spot to another, but when they feel comfortable they easily stay in the same spot for a little while.
Backyard Deer - Beginner
Nice, you have a backyard full of dinner!
Beginner.
This is my dog Paddy who likes to pretend he is a jedi.
Paddy the Padawan. All snuggled up. Great shot @crazybgadventure.

Hi @derangedvisions!
Congratulations for the new contest, I wish for it, to be a huge success.
My entry is here:

I’ ll go for the professional tier, the only think is that I have not decide which shot, out of the 4 in the post, to submit.
But, I promise, I’ll make up my mind asap and post my entry here too.
I am hoping that you are able to narrow down which photo you want to use. They were all amazing.
Yes I am!
Thank you for your nice words and for yous patience. :)
Awesome entry. The she is just waiting for you to start petting her. That expression is priceless!
Never heard of that before!

This is a photo of my amazing great dane, Sasha. She loves to sit like this with her legs crossed. She is definitely a true lady!
Such an elegant young lady. Great shot @papacrusher. I am glad you are here in the contest.
Glad to have entered, you know I'm a sucker for contests!
your photos are much more than amateur!! LOL
and i love me some Sasha!! good luck :)
Yeah, she is the best! I need to break down and get a decent camera so I can hang with the big boys and girls like you!
ive seen your photos though, i really thought you were more amateur/pro
im just learning, although i got my first instamatic at prob 8 years old and that old cam with the attachable flash, then that ugly disc cam lol
ive mostly been shooting with my iphone and a nikon point n shoot until recently.
I collect vintage film cameras and love the elegant simplicity of them!
so you know the ones im
talking about?
For sure! The ones I collect are a bit older but I really love all film cameras.
Hermoso!
not sure can i be in Amateur section? i am not making money from my photography.
had a half hour time this afternoon so went to the backyard with my Helios 44 modified lens, wanted to film some b roll, so i grabbed an opportunity to snap few photos of my cats (technically they are my cats, i feed them and they are in our yard but touching them or being to close to them when not feeding them is a challenge :) )
maybe i will try again tomorrow and get something better :)
I have you locked in as amateur for the remainder of the month. It is whatever you want to be. Great shot. It is nice to see someone use some diffusion. Makes it look mystical.

I'm really not sure if I'm not again a little bit o"out of the topic" ;) but as you suggested I went out and was looking for so nice furry animal, as I don't have any at home. I've found a small garden with some toys on the sticks and one of them was this poor-looking furry dog... but now I can see some similarities with picture of macaque taken by @intrepidphotos :)
LOL, I love this!! This poor guy has seen some better days.
But at least he is not alone there...
Hi @derangedvisions...here's my entry.... definitely looking forward to upping my game as I go so I start off at Beginner's Category with this one
And here's my post if you'd like to check it out 😊
My cats do this exact face when they get woken up from their nap when I am trying to get their attention for a photo. Great entry!
Fun contest. I am an Amateur photographer. I took this photo of a wild rabbit I spotted near the War Memorial in Canberra, Australia. Love its eyes! I have a soft spot for rabbits.
Awesome! I just realized that I have never taken a picture of a rabbit in my whole life. Not even with a cell phone of anything. I need to change that. They are such cool little fluff balls. I love their ears. Great shot. I am looking forward to more of your entries!
Thanks!
great contest!

This is a very furry cat of my friend.
if you take it in your arms, then you too become a fluffy cat! All clothes are covered with white fur!
I love this picture. I wish my cats would sleep like this. Mine just curl up in balls on top of all of my stuff. One of my cats jumps onto my shoulders and sleeps up there as I work on my computer.
i'm joining this contest.
here is my posts link...

and it is the photo with which i want to join and which i used in my post.
it's my pet cat and i called it as 'Mishu' and it's a he.
one day i'd found him up on our terrace and he was resting.
i got the shot at that time.
i used my Symphony Xplorer i10 for this shot.
and i think myself as an amateur photographer.
thanks... @derangedvisions
Great shot. I love the expression on Mishu's face. It is like he is in deep thought.
yeah, it's a great expression.
and he was a great pet indeed.

Hello everyone, greetings from Maracaibo Venezuela, I am not a professional photographer (not close) but I love photographing my cat NINO, he is my best model, he is always willing to pose for me, in these photos he was behind a curtain looking at the street, He is an apartment cat and rarely goes out to the street, he loves to look out the window at the hectic outside but with the security of being at home.
I participate in the amateur category, I hope you like my modest photos, taken with my cell phone Huawei P7
Beginner for me!
Opal isn't shy. She's concerned.
Opal is getting big. She is a lot bigger than the last picture i saw of her.
It's all an illusion :) She's full grown in all the shots I've put on steem so far.
lol. You have mastered camera tricks?? You may be more than a beginner.
I took this photo of a wild seal in Monterey, California in June 2015. Taken with a Nikon p510.
I love using the super zoom lense on my camera to get close up shots of wild animals. A great way to enjoy them while giving them some space. ☺️
Seals are furry right? 😄
I’ll say I am an amateur.
I had been promising my 4 year old son that I would get him a puppy. One day I was headed towards home on my motorcycle and saw something move out of my peripheral vision. It was a puppy that someone abandoned along the road. She is smaller than my foot, so I put her in my backpack and zippered her in except her head was left outside the pack. Now she is part of the family and I have a happy boy. We are Americans living in the Philippines.
Taken with my IPad Pro. Amateur
Such a cute little puppy. Thank you for picking her up and making your boy happy with his new best friend. Great shot.
Than you!
Amateur - Here's little Avril, our little grumpy lady Poorkie... Ok let's explain that, Avril is very grumpy even when she's so fluffy and cute, she doesn't like other people, dogs, or any other forms of life... She just tolerate our other dog Dakota and cats a little. She loves being rubbed with the feets and eating things that shouldn't. We say she's a Poorkie because is the summatory of a Poodle and a Yorkie.
This is such a cute dog! I love the expression. Great shot @themonkeyzuelans.

looking forward to what you have. You are a great photographer!
Thanks, I really appreciate these words, especially when coming from an excellent photographer like you but to be honest, I dont even have a camera, I have been using my cell phone :D Thats why I dont even feel like an amateur but a complete beginner and I think I will submit my entries into this category. My furry animal entry coming soon ;)

Great idea for a contest! Here's my "Amateur" entry:
Meet my mothers' new puppy - Jasmine! :)
This shot is so cute! I love that she has her little chew toy with her for the picture. I am really looking forward to seeing more of your work. Thank you for participating.
Thanks! She was very photogenic as a puppy! :)
Hi @derangedvisions! I'm so excited discovering this contest!
Is it OK to put taglines into my photos? If not, I'll remove it and repost.
Talk about expressing "deranged" in a photo, here is a quote to accompany my photo: Most governments today and thieves have the same leaning, "What is yours is mine."
**I WISH to be a professional photographer but will be happy to submit my photos as an Amateur unless you say I pass as a professional. :p
Hi @patlu, great shot and thank you for participating. I had a black cat that we got when we lived in Japan when I was younger. We named him "Habu" after the snake that was there in Okinawa.
If you want to add a tagline in your photo that is up to you, but it does detract from the photo. One thing you could do is in the markdown script after you drop the image, use < sup> < /sup> and then write your tagline inside the code. You will have to close the spaces for it to for work right. It will look like this:
What is yours is mine
Thanks for your prompt reply @derangedvisions. BRILLIANT! Thank you so much for the feedback and tip! Is this current photo qualified for your contest or do I need to resubmit the photo without the text?
BTW, this is my neighbour's cat who drops by every night for supper. His name is Legam, in Malay language means blacker than black. A very handsome boy indeed.
Once again, your feedback is very much appreciated. <3
Ok gotta wake up the pooch then
let's see it. Don't forget to label your skill level too. You might get thrown in with the pros
Beep! Beep! @shadow3scalpel at your service. I am here to assist all military members on Steemit. This HumVee will be scouting posts from a list of Veterans that is maintained by @chairborne. If you are a Veteran and new to Steemit, and you have questions or want to join the Veterans community, reply to this comment. We got your six, unless you are in the rear with the gear. Ooh-Rah!

only 1 photo per theme Sir?
Yes, only one photo. You don't want to make it too hard for me to choose which one to use. That is up to you.
oh ok, thanks for clearing that up.
Hi @derangedvisions, this time I'm submitting my cat photo under the Professional level... trying my luck! :p There are 3 more photos within with a poem under each photo. Enjoy...

Only one entry per contest will be judged. I have you locked in as an amateur from your previous entry.
Great image.
Opppps, I forgot about the one entry per contest.
And thanks for your kind compliment! <3
