A witness plays a crucial part in how the STEEM network functions. Like I learnt, Steemit is just a fancy web interface on top of a large network called STEEM, which operates remotely similar to Bitcoin but they're the main producer of blocks (not miners) and they maintain a price feed, which is how SBD functions.
